This is a lie. My children's homework counts towards their grades. This is an FCPS elementary school. |
Nowhere in that article does it say that lower SES and POC are disadvantaged by homework. |
The PP is referring the percentage breakdown that determines grades in SIS. That does not occur in ES. |
|
Since 2018, FCPS has followed the Design Principles of Cultural Responsiveness for lesson plans and teaching. These principals make sure that learning:
- is challenging and meaningful, - respects differing identities, - helps students think critically, and - supports good relationships. Culturally, differential quantities of homework may be appropriate adaptations for certain communities existent within FCPS. |
| Herndon high doesn’t give homework for this reason |

Can you point to the area on the elementary school report card that is for “homework?” Didn’t think so.
You kids 1-2-3-4 on their report card is closely tied to how they do on tests or performance based assessments. If your kid gets a 59 on the math test but they did all their homework, they might get a 3 instead of the 2 that they deserve, but that’s up to the teacher. Saying homework counts is stretching. |
Now that is an FCPS policy. We aren’t supposed to count he towards the academic grade. ES Teacher Homework and Extra Credit Homework can be considered as part of the effort grade, but would not be used to grade academic achievement in elementary school since the function of homework is to provide practice in skill areas. https://www.fcps.edu/academics/grading-reporting/elementary-school/elementary-grading-and-reporting-handbook-parents |
I am surprised they still call it home work, that sounds prejudice against those without homes, maybe it should be called place where one lives work |
Ha! |
Thank you for posting the policy proving the coworker was correct |
To the OP: - does that answer your question? Your coworker was mostly right, in that FCPS has largely done away with graded homework. What remains of homework now seems to be essentially meaningless / optional. |
| Never forget the few ignorant parents who think their kids homework counts as a grade, just because the teacher put a smiley face on it. |
The problem is it’s not nonsense. He’s absolutely right. |
How so? The OP said the co-worker stated that hw is not allowed per FCPS policy. This says homework can be counted towards the effort grade, but not the academic grade. If hw can be counted toward the effort grade, it is obviously allowed. |

NP.
Appears FCPS still maintains ungraded, optional, sporadically requested “homework” largely as a fig-leaf against claims it no longer has homework. |
