Using pot or alcohol is weird. |
It is gaining steam, as multiple reasons come to play at the same time:
- legalization of weed, but this is leading to increase of gummies (some without THC) on the market - better tasting NA beers, wines - Wegovy/Ozempic increase in popularity, has a well known side effect of decreasing the desire and craving for alcohol With that said, I think some of the sobriety popularity is limited to pockets of the population. When I go back to where I grew up, breweries and bars still have a very large presence. |
Interesting. When I hear people making a big deal over not having even an occasional drink I think they're low IQ sheep or have drinking problems--so the opposite of discipline. Smart people with discipline know there is nothing wrong with enjoying a cocktail or glass of wine friends--or even by yourself--every now and then. If you have to go 100% without, it means you have no self-control. |
This is patently absurd and you live in a bubble. Seriously, you need to get out more. |
True. None of my college kid's friend drink, and they are all 21. Totally different from my college experience. |
I disagree. Way, way too many effeminate dweeb men were making IPAs, bourbon and scotch their personality, as if it made them look macho. And too many low class women thought they were bourgeois because they know wine. Pendulum is just swinging back away from that cringe. |
I think older Millennials and young Gen X, the late 30s-late 40s contingent, are more health conscious than previous generations and don’t want to consume the calories/carbs/sugar in alcoholic drinks. And a lot of people now are recognizing that they don’t like the way that alcohol makes them feel, so they’re drinking less or none at all. Also alcoholic drinks are $$$ compared to sodas and iced tea and stuff and everyone is cutting back on spending these days. Lots of reasons. I’m an older Millennial and my friend group aren’t heavy drinkers either. |
They are subtly broadcasting it to everyone because they want to signal they’re better than you. Strivers are constantly jockeying for perceived status. Having the discipline to quit booze is a form of status they want to shove in your face. They’re “above” being addicted to alcohol. They’re super clear headed and focused on their health and sleep patterns or whatever other trendy gobbledygook. ![]() |
I think it’s weird to criticize people who are no longer interested in drinking or who are trying to live healthier lives. Of all the things to pick on. Not everything is about you or is a judgment of your choices.
I have maybe one drink a month because I simply don’t enjoy it like I used to. And it interrupts my sleep more as I get older. It actually makes it easier for me to be more social, because now I don’t have to worry about how I’m going to feel the next morning, or how I’m getting home safely, etc. I’m more likely to say yes to things now. |
When you get to be 40+ drinking hits hard. Anyone who is not an alcoholic usually cuts back considerably. |
Healthier living... while out to eat? Restaurant food is full of preservatives, sugar, salt, butter, and oils. |
+1 Pot is for losers. |

Allegedly the Jimmy Buffett type of boomers are into weed and edibles. I’ve also heard that crowd is into swinging, believe it or not. |
