Really worried about my college senior graduating into this environment

H1b's are used to drive down salaries of American workers. They were supposed to be for extremely hard to fill, advanced jobs but naturally became misused.

The program has been an excellent way to bring in highly educated foreigners who become green card and citizens so probably a net positive despite the negatives.

Same here. And he'd like to get a place with friends but, so far, is the only one in his group with a job so will live with us for a while and save money.

There is always a bull market somewhere, and right now in DC, Defense-Tech is super hot. Just in the last week I have seen five start-ups in the DC area raise $250MM+ (total) in this sector. You need AI/ML/Computer Vision skills, as well as engineering/robotics skills.

It requires security clearances. I am in the DoD AI/ML/VHDL and we have ten openings for skills like this; however, it also requires TS clearance.

How do security clearances work? Who pays?

My soon to be grad had their job rescinded two weeks ago. Guess they are coming home and will start the process all over again. Ugh!!

That's all. Just needed to say it out loud. Thanks for listening.

Don’t worry

Our gov has been expanding H1B and opt for 35 years , taking Jobs from our children to give to cheap foreign labor

Here's a clue: Many kids in the US do not want the H1B jobs held by the "foreigners" you use a scapegoat for your grievances.

A friend of mine moved to the US, first, on a J1 student visa and later held a job with H1B visa. He has an MD/PhD and made about 30k at his first job. With H1B he made around 45k. He is likely now making a middle class salary for this area and it only took 25 years to make that happen.

I assure you that people in this country with MD/PhDs are not clamoring for these jobs. But, hey, don't worry. These jobs (medical research) are being eliminated now anyway. GL to you when your or someone you love needs cancer, diabetes treatments, etc.

Well here’s the problem those jobs do not require a MD/PHD. Universities are pumping out a lot of STEM students, med school is extremely difficult to get into and those research jobs are in demand now. The same thing is happening in tech. It used to be that US IT candidates in the DMV only had MS centric skills, no C+, Python, JAVA or whatever. We hired H1Bs for programming, integration and web positions but now US schools are pumping out tons of potential employees with current skills.

+1 a foreign trained md/phd is not the same as in the us. the foreign md is a 3-year bachelor's and the overseas phd is more like our master's in science with a thesis.

Why do we need security clearances anymore? The cabinet is full of Russian-compromised people, and they use Gmail and Signal to discuss secret issues.

If the info is being fed to Russia anyway, why the need for a clearance anymore? I bet they get rid of those one day as part of Project 2025.

+1 what a joke.

In the Trump administration, the low level staffers need to have TS clearance but the top administrators don't. Jokes on us.

I graduated in 2009, had my job offer canceled when the company did mass layoffs. I ended up going to grad school out of desperation and it turned out okay. But boy it wasn't easy and I ate a LOT of beans. Some of my friends struggled for longer. I'm really sorry for these kids.

Do have links or names of those companies to apply to? Thanks!

Valid concerns OP.

This market sucks so bad! My DS is graduating in two weeks and only has a mostly unpaid internship (congressional). He has done everything right, went to a top school, got great grades, solid internships. And yet, he has no ft opps, when he surely would’ve last year.

I’m worried. DC just graduated from T25 and no job, none of friends of have job, despite stellar resumes and internships last two summers. A couple have internships, one got a crappy job that they said might not cover rent, and one had a fantastic job from last year’s internship, but they moved the start date from Sep to Feb.

Ugh…

Last year was not so hot either.

Mine has a job lined up but is still anxious. He has 2 friends and a cousin whose job offers were rescinded due to cutting back and the economy.

My kid graduated and will be living at home until he finds a full time job and saves up a little money. He graduated debt free so the pressure to get a high paying position is off of him. I’m confident that he’ll find something. It might not pay what he wants but it’ll be enough for him to move out and share a place with roommates. My husband and I both started out the same way and we’re doing alright.

Peace Corps has cut backs at the moment.
