There is no consensus of course. DCUM has different camps:
1. The status-obsessed that have been strategizing how to get into Ivy + since child was in the womb. 2. The college-is-vocational school group where anything other than the shortest path to a CS or engineering degree is a waste of time and money. 3. The ones looking for “feeders” to Wall Street/consulting and/or top business school, law school, or med school. 4. The ones who think any religious school is a MAGA breeding ground 5. The ones who think elite colleges are Marxist indoctrinators 6. The ones who’ve heard of only about 30 colleges and assume because they haven’t heard of a college it can’t be any good 7. |
Denison gets tons of love from the SLAC crowd. Deservedly so. |

| Pitt!!! |
Favorite backup safety school. |
DP. A few others: 8. The ones for whom OOS is always a waste of money and need that view validated. 9. The LAC boosters for whom LACs are better at absolutely every aspect and inject LACs into every discussion. 10. The UMD crowd who inject UMD into every discussion. 11. The private high school crowd who need a midsize private college in order to not lose status points with the other parents. |

Pitt
UVM Va Tech |
Only kind of. I know a lot of kids who started with the idea of Pitt as a safety, and then visited and loved it. Then, Pitt offers these high stats kids great merit aid. Then, the high stats kids choose Pitt over higher ranked schools. So it might start as a safety for the high stats kids, but I'm seeing plenty of kids CHOOSE Pitt in the end over higher ranked schools. |
What's a backup safety? |
Yes. Pitt is the "everyone should EA here" school. |
| VT. It's a good school and accessible/does a good job of serving Virginians by not being unnecessarily exclusive, so people aren't mad about not getting in as often as other schools. |
