OPs white guilt causes them to reduce a completely expectable “indigenous population makes up workforce serving visitors” down to “colored folk serving whites”.
It makes them uncomfortable because they can’t see a darker skinned human as anything more than the color of their skin. |
Agree. It's pitiful and repulsive when choices about anything are made based on racial considerations, apart perhaps from when racial differences affect medical treatments. |
And exactly why do you prefer to vacation at a resort with a diverse clientele? You prefer to ogle a wide range of people? Or do you plan to bother them and force them to talk to you while they are on vacation trying to relax? What a weird request. |
NP here. As POC, we always think about diversity when booking travel. Racism is real and we don’t our vacation ruined by racist a-holes. |
"Diversity" doesn't mean there won't be racist a-holes present. |
Some of the most blatant racism I ever witnessed were by non whites towards other non whites. |
I find it interesting how triggering the idea of looking for a more diverse resort is.
To me, it makes sense that, if you live in a diverse place, you'll feel more comfortable in a resort that's not lily white. |
We went to a nice resort in Belize with racially diverse guests but all Americans. I think that was just a lucky week though. |
The white lotus. There’s one on Maui, one in Sicily and recent one opened on Ko Samui, Thailand |
Sure they are. |
Many of the comments advocating for diversity at resorts are completely reasonable. An international crowd can be a vibe. Different varieties of white folk can be a vibe too. Sometimes, places like the Tryall Club in Jamaica can feel like someone just picked up Chevy Chase and plopped it in the tropics which is kind of boring.
But none of that is what the OP was getting at. They were explicitly saying they didn’t like the whole “local people with darker skin serving a white crowd” thing. This is an OP problem. That’s what travel is. Local people serving visitors. OP wasn't speaking to the intrigue or style of the crowd (achievable through any number of different aspects of personality irrespective of skin color). They just don’t like the appearance of dark serving white regardless of the context. It’s a gross reduction of human beings to a single visual trait that has no bearing on their humanity and completely ignores the context of one nationality hosting another. ie. Bahamians are Bahamian, joyful, fun, proud of their country, outgoing, and incredible hosts, but to the OP, they are just black. The original post is disgustingly racist. |
Yes. Good analysis and critique. The way to not be racist is to not be racist. Integrating racial consciousness into choices is inherently racist. |
How is this diverse other than the staff? |
Negril, Jamaica. But not at an all inclusive resort. Stay in one of the places in town - you will get a much more authentic experience. I saw people there of all races - its very peaceful and beautiful. |
I travel a lot and take a lot of high end vacations. It's tough to find a "diverse high end resort" for various reasons. One of the reasons is that the world is divided into countries and most countries are predominantly a certain ethnicity, race, or culture. Even in countries that are very diverse, like Belgium for example, the various ethnic groups self segregate. The liberal US dream of a cultural mosaic is a pretty American concept.
So maybe go to Universal Studios and stay at one of their premium/signature resorts? Those are pretty diverse. And the roller coasters are fun. |
