I need to travel this weekend. I am nervous about flying. Should I take a quick flight or do a grueling, long drive?

99.9% of scheduled flights depart and arrive without incident. Once every few weeks, there's a "near miss" - which is generally a well controlled go-around procedure. That's one flight in maybe a few thousand. Once every 20 years there's a hull loss incident in which passengers die. That's about like being struck by lightning. Just fly and relax.

I had to fly AA into DC shortly after the tragic accident. And now there was another incident with AA approaching DCA the other day and once again I’m waiting to board a flight into National shortly.

Praying that airline safety can once again be a priority.

That was not an incident. Go arounds are common. See the thread in politics.

This. I was on a flight that aborted the landing (scariest thing ever to go from landing to accelerating rapidly up) 15 years ago. It didn't make the news so I just assumed it happened sometimes and they have processes and controls to avoid crashes. Obviously not the case with what happened at DCA last month though.

I flew on American yesterday into DCA. Will do it again on Monday. And the week after that. I feel safe but note that there are predictions of delayed or even diverted flights as they try to stretch the gaps between planes landing. Yesterday our takeoff was delayed about 15 minutes due to traffic mgmt at DCA, although we still got in on time. The schedule board in the airport showed a lot of delays.

Elon Musk also scored himself a lucrative no bid contract for Starlink to provide internet services to FAA. And he has a history of turning those services off when it suits him (see the service provision of Starlink in Ukraine). That would make all our flights less safe.
