Probably it has been mostly pilfered over the decades.

An interesting tidbit fact, all the known gold in the entire world that has been mined since the beginning of civilization, would only make a cube 60 ft x 60 ft x 60ft in volume.

Why would they be wearing gloves for gold? It doesn't tarnish or oxidize. Very suspicious.
