Added up costs for 2024

My parents are currently living independently although we pay someone to go in 12 hours per week to try to help them to the extent my mom will allow. But when my father passes I think we will need a different solution for my mother. We would actually pass her around us kids but unfortunately most of us don’t have an accessible bedroom and she can’t do stairs. Does anyone know if these IL or AL facilities will allow you do to a few months at a time, maybe furnished? I would bring her out for a few months and put her in someplace close to me if that were feasible.

Also this is a total aside but in shopping for kitchen appliances I learned that it’s basically impossible to start a fire with new induction stoves/ranges — what a great option for the elderly.

They won't hold the unit for her (unless you pay in full, of course.) So if you move her out, you run the risk that they won't have any availability when you want her to move back in. Also, if her health has changed/deteriorated, they could choose to not accept her back.

Yeah, the moving in-and-out plan probably won't work. Most places want you to stay, and they might not accept you the 2nd or 3rd application. Plus, there's usually a somewhat large one-time fee for moving in. In our case it was $1k for assisted living where my dad went for 2 months after a stroke, and then *another* $1k for Independent Living (where he went after recovering sufficiently). Same campus. Sheesh

It's $605 PER NIGHT for one person!!

They are currently paying about $5k/month for a 2 bedroom apt in Independent Living (IL) bu my mom will have to go the SNF very soon. So they'll be paying $24k per month for the 2 of them. They have $300k in house proceeds and $400k in an IRA which won't last that long at those rates. Yikes.

the cost goes for $5k per month for 2BR (seems like a great price) to $24k per month for skilled nursing?

Yeah, isn't that crazy? I think that's why I'm so shocked. They landed on this "campus" after my dad had a stroke - he spent a short time in rehab, then a 2 month stint in Assisted Living (a studio was $6k/month, which seemed reasonable) and then to Independent Living where my mom joined him. I never thought the SNF could be so much more expensive. Maybe they're compensating for too many people in Medicaid beds?

Hmm. I think the extra fee is due to the ccrc. Most SNF beds that I looked at that were stand alone and not attached to a CCR were at the 450-480/day cost. NOVA

Wow, I would never think that NoVa would be cheaper than New York state lol. It's not a CCRC so I'm not sure what's up. Fortunately, I've been able to find in-home care for $20-$25/hour so we're doing that for now. But that's a LCOL in western NY, not anywhere near NYC.

Where are you located that you pay $9K for two?

We also pay around $11K a month for one.
