Evaluating kids in the context of their specific high school peer group

Anonymous
It was pretty clear that OP was referring to a podcast, though I didn't know which one based on the acronym. I'm not a podcast person. Would anyone who has listened be willing to give more context to points 1 and 2 below? (The others were fairly easy to follow.)

1. Kids in HS "making a choice to avoid rather than embrace"

2. There are "bells and whistles that might keep a student in the running" (I assume this means those fancy national awards?)

ha. lol. so true. when you are in deep, all of this makes so much sense.

OP's original post made perfect sense to me!

I typed the summary while I listened. Sheesh. Sorry its not clear. Its literally quotes.

NP. I understood perfectly, OP.

So funny that the readers who did not immediately understand what the post was about immediately attacked OP. Like it’s OP’s fault for not putting it in a platter for them. Be curious, look it up. I had no idea what YCBK was, but it took all of 5 seconds to google it and have an entire new resource available.

Thanks OP! Ignore those who can’t take a lead and bridge a gap. Poor sheep.

I'm just going off memory as I listened while driving but:

1) refers to rigor in class selection. If one is selecting easier classes, or avoiding a foreign language, or shying away from subjects that are difficult, "they are making a choice to avoid rather than embrace" improving themselves, and this could be noticed.

2) Susan (one of the counselors on the podcast) did not expand on this, and the OP was probably inviting opinions on what these might be but the obvious ones might me:
- athletics
- development
- legacy
- faculty association
- filling a void the school might need such as a lead oboist
- certain types of awards/achievements

I seriously applaud you. I knew, but if I didn’t, that would’ve been my play as well. It’s a wonder anyone posts here anymore. There are some genuinely good posters, but it’s a thankless job, and putting up with the snark is taxing.

Op here: thanks all. Didn’t have time to come back. In years past we’d share stuff like this all the time. So though it was normal!!

This place has changed though? Anyway I have a senior again and just heard the podcast, so thought relevant. Hope we can do more useful sharing/knowledge exchange like this (and not new tiering and rankings) if folks also initiate.

Will post additional thoughts later.

Thanks - I will listen when I have a chance. The (mostly political) podcasts I listen to also have youtube channels and I prefer the visual!

OP - thank you for posting these thoughts. I used to listen to YCBK but there were so many episodes and they were long, so I only listen occasionally nowadays. Your sum up made sense and this was one of the more helpful ones on DCUM so I'm sorry you were attacked for no reason.
