I never used TikTok. I never had an account.

Some people are dependent on it. There's a TikTok shop with affiliate links and coupon codes.

It seemed like young creators were waisting their time making videos critiquing agree or disagree with other creator videos.

Huge time waist.

I am a female mid 50s liberal. I was disturbed by the number of young women with TikTok videos dedicated to discussing how much men hate women.

Don't give away your power like that by stating the obvious and preaching to the choir.

When I was a young woman I didn't like it. I didn't accept it. I avoided it. I sure didn't spend my free time analyzing it and talking about it.

It's better now than it was even 10 years ago.

It's like Zootopia. Women are prey. Men are predators. Sometimes bunny rabbits and foxes can be friends. Sometimes lambs are baaaaad.

TikTok is going to end up in the hands of some American billionaire and become another rightwing mouthpiece (like Twitter/X).

Look at what Zuckerberg just said in his video this week - he said they are tweaking the algorithm to push MORE political content.

It's going to be a firehouse of rightwing messaging on every social media platform.

Most of these TikTok videos are short videos on YouTube.

TikTok will be absorbed by other SM or a new SM app made in US.

Probably the only real reason it’s being banned is that someone in US wants to make the money TikTok is using.

Isn’t Temu also from China? To me that one is more concerning because they steal other ideas and can produce them quicker and take away someone else’s creativity and earnings.

I think ByteDance does a strategic retreat and doesn't sell. Otherwise that means they have to hand over the user base, algorithms, and data to an American owner. Not gonna happen, imho - I don't think China will allow it. They already make gobs of money.

I don’t want to be lectured about how I spend my time from someone who doesn’t know the difference between waste and waist. And I’m sure that when you we 20 there were plenty of 50 year olds that that the way you spent your time was stupid.

Me too except I hope that eventually the reality of what people see vs. what is being fed to them will start to make a difference. This time that feeling broke in the Republican direction---lots of independents and swing voters didn't buy the progressive party line on crime, transgender issues, etc. But people will realize that mass deportations are not, in fact, going to happen. And that R tax breaks will only inure to the benefit of billionaires. And they will certainly notice if any of the popular Obamacare protections such as no denial for pre-existing conditions and permitting adult kids to stay on policies until age 26 are repealed. And if tariffs ARE imposed (doubtful) people will certainly notice when the price of everything at Walmart increases by 20%. My middle class retiree mom was a Trump voter until the minute the 2017 tax act increased her taxes while the taxes for billionaires were lowered.

My concern about tiktok is the format of a charismatic person speaking directly to the camera. Directly to me. It taps into my emotional brain. Even though I know I don't have any relationship with the person, it still feeds my emotional brain. I don't want to get any emotional fulfillment that way.

After listening to the arguments, I think they are probably going to kick it down the road to see if the new administration can deal with Congress. I'm not sure what that deal will end up looking like and ultimately it may end up being banned which I wouldn't be too sad about
