I guess what I should have said it that is doesn't bother me more than the fact that other social media platforms are doing the same thing, including Twitter and Meta. I don't think they are more trustworthy just because they are American companies. It comes with the territory when using social media and I have accepted it (although I am not on Twitter anymore and the only Meta platform I use now is IG.)

It will be interesting to see the evidence that is presented to SCOTUS about the harm to national security.

I think you need to distinguish between siphoning data for profit reasons and for political strategic reasons. Meta and all those others are definitely garbage companies not to be trusted, but tik tok is a different kind of threat. Couple it with our compromised telecom systems and you end up with a worrisome situation.

For example, if I owned a Tesla I would be concerned about the camera recordings and remote access exhibited in the Vegas explosion. Yes, used for good in this case, but who is governing how much they turn over to the government/police?

Yes, very much so. US companies are totally out of control with their invasiveness. But tik tok is a national security issue. The US companies are a different kind of threat.

TikTok is obligated to share anything the CCP demands of them and also works to push propaganda for them. If you are asking about everyday people then it's about a foreign adversary collecting videos, private messages, and photos from an entire generation.

What happens to those millions of influencers where TikTok is their main platform? Most have been trying to move to other spaces, like Instagram and YouTube, but a lot of their content doesn't translate well to those platforms. YouTube monetizes longer videos, which most TT people don't make. Instagram is all about engagement metrics for monetization, and from what I've heard from friends who do digital marketing, Instagram is one of their least favorite platforms because their algorithm is total crap. I believe it because I follow fewer than 100 people on my personal Instagram, mostly friends and family, and I hardly ever see their most recent posts without seeking them out. I just get tons of junk suggestions in my feed.

Also, I love, love, LOVE that the government did this to protect our info and then 2 weeks ago it came out that Android and iPhone users should never message each other using their phones default messaging apps because China can and IS reading those messages... and the government is silent. No biggie. Just use an encrypted messaging app and that's enough. GTFO. China being able to read Android to iPhone (and vice versa) messages is a hell of a bigger deal that fricking TikTok. Plus, to be honest, a LOT of Senators and Congresspeople are total tech morons. I had an internship with my state Senator 8 years ago and it was appalling how little he understood about technology. He kept his passwords taped to his gd computer screen! GOVERNMENT PASSWORDS. And you already know this MF had Password1-2016 as one of his passwords. He had a list of crossed out previous passwords: Password1-2015, Password1-2014. Mmmm secure protection for government secrets, LFG!!! We also got phishing tests all the time and he was the only one who fell for them.
