What is your travel budget and plan for 2025?

My partner and I spent two months in Europe in 2022. Since then we’ve really had no desire to travel. Maybe we just aged out of it. We are planning to spend a month in Massachusetts in July to escape the heat.

OP here, agree - just looking for some inspiration at any budget and how to make dollars work harder especially for trips with a family of 4. Helpful to get a sense of the big picture - meaning if the family is taking 1 huge trip just once in the whole year for 20k, or several small trips. Like I mentioned in the initial post, we haven't had a year like this where much of our travel isn't already set based on other obligations.

Family of 4 flying coach can do a week-ish in Paris at a reasonable cost per person. Let's say $400/night for AirBnB...$2,800. And maybe $6K for airfares for 4 (ours were $1200-ish for late March 2023). You can do local grocery shopping for similar price to home. We enjoyed modest treats like riding the Batobus on the Seine, the free history museum in the Marais, seeing the Eiffel Tower do its hourly sparkle nightime routine, etc.

For now, our year is a trip for 2 in Lapland in Q1 and a trip for 4 on a Very Merrytime Disney cruise in Q4. That's quite a bit of our budget as it is - interested in how others split out their budget and plan for the year, perhaps interspersing small drivable trips to make the year still feel full.

Q1: Lapland & Helsinki ($10K 2 people 7 nights)
Q4: Very Merrytime Cruise ($12K 4 people 4 nights)

I think in total our budget is $30-35 for the year, we could stretch more but prefer not to. Adding a child and grandma to our trips has made the budget go much quicker than it used to.

I'd like to add some local trips maybe Hershey Park (maybe $1500), NYC (maybe $1500), etc. and perhaps another flying trip like BahaMar for 3 (could be done in $4500).

OP, tell me more about your plans for Lapland! In the early stages of planning and tring to figure out where to go...

20k - working remotely abroad for two months over summer; long overseas trip at winter break, September beach weekends, a couple of domestic long weekends.

I'm thinking we'll spend under $20k for our family of 5 this year.

We're planning to go to NYC for a few days over spring break. $3k

This summer, we'll drive down to the beach in either NC or SC and rent a place for a week. $5k

We'll visit family back in the Midwest over the holidays and will just have to pay for flights. $2k

DH is having a milestone birthday and we have a big anniversary this year so we're looking for a cool vacation to celebrate this fall, just the 2 of us. Not sure where yet. $5k

Then we'll probably do a couple of long weekends away within driving distance when the kids have off of school. $2k

So far, $5000 for a 4-night cruise with two nights in Miami beforehand.

OP here, we are flying to Ivalo and starting out at a hotel there (part of Wilderness, which has a lot of activities included in several packages), and then transferring by bus to Rovaniemi for 2 days, and then finally to Helsinki for about 40 hours on the way home (best flights). We chose Ivalo mainly because its in the North, because I didn't like the reviews of Kaskalutten, and started liking this Wildnerness brand of resorts on review. The one we chose is adults only, but they have several including Muotka which is also up there. Recommend having your flight go up to one of those northern cities first and then bussing down (you can't fly between the arctic cities unfortunately).

OP here - this sounds like almost $10k for a trip, which is about what we are thinking as we support more people. Do you have any other local trips plan to break up the year?

Anonymous wrote:Our budget is roughly $10K per year for a family of 3 to take one 10 to 12 day vacation, usually in an international destination. We also spend a week every summer with family on the west coast. That costs roughly $2k for flights and some meals, but we use points to cover that.

I thought that travel budget was pretty average, but judging by this thread, it's quite low.

OP here, so nice to have family in a place you might want to visit - our family is all in one place (fortunate in so many ways, but this one)

A solo trip to Sicily end of July 9 days: $3000. Flight was the biggest fee - but I’ll be doing Airbnb close to the beach and eating snacks.

This time last year we did California, Thailand, New York, day trips to Delaware, Florida, Colorado. It was too much.

OP here - WOW, Sicily for 3K for a week is w i l d- i love it
