| Thanks for the thread OP. Was just thinking about doing something for 1) the McDonald’s workers who take my orders and get me my breakfast everyday, and 2) garage attendants who greet me warmly everyday morning and night. Would STBX GC suitable or Target GC better, or something else? |
I do not. Because I would never tip a doctor and this seems the same. |

Kids in MS now and it feels weird to send holiday money to a bunch of different teachers.
I do one week cleaning amount to the cleaners. $1000 to my secretary. $1000 to the live in building manager in our family beach house where we have been living this year during a renovation. One extra week for ds math tutor. I try to remember $20 for the bus driver. |
Not if it’s after the fact. I wrote glowing recommendations for a family that was considèring moving. It would have been nice just to get an email saying thanks, kids got in and they were leaving town instead of finding out when the kids didn’t return the next year. |
+1 I seriously don’t understand why a basic family of 2 adults and 3 kids or less need all this junk. Clean your own house, open your own door, walk your own dog. Such a waste of money. |
| I need to give my kids’ daycare teachers a tip/holiday bonus. When you guys say you give cash, are you giving actual currency or visa gift cards? When I was younger, I always appreciated straight up cash/check for even simple things like paying a bill. Is cash/currency okay? |
No, you are not. You are absolutely correct. I don't have most of the services listed here. If I had a maid to clean my apartment regularly, I would tip her the value of one cleaning, which seems to be the accepted amount, assuming that I was happy with the service. I will not tip the garbageman. Mailmen are allowed to accept non-cash gifts up to $20 in value ($50 total per year from one person). They are not allowed to accept cash. Trying to give them cash puts them in an awkward position of having to either refuse a kind gesture or accept it and risk their job. Tipping teachers with cash seems to be terribly fraught with ethical problems. Contributing anonymously to a PTA or classroom fund or sending a nice homemade cake or something would seem to be a better approach, and this really should be done at the end of the year after grades have been submitted. |
| I've never thought of tipping the garbage collectors. Do you just tape an envelope to the trash can? We live in a townhouse complex. |

Bumping this question. Thanks! |
I'm a few years past daycare age, but back then I'd give gift cards (Target or Amazon, something generic everyone can use). |
