Would love to see where they got these numbers from. It seems to go against their own data.

Your data is the month of October. The WTOP article referenced year-over-year data. |
I need to see the actual data from which the numbers were drawn because I don't believe this for a minute. First of all, there was a massive loss of teachers around the time of COVID because that was just an absolute shit show. So to say numbers are up after that isn't saying much. Second of all, what teachers are we referring to? If this includes trainees and whatnot, then all you're doing is hiding the actual problem, lack of trained teachers, and pretending everything is fine.
Given that the BOS has made it clear already that they don't plan on fully funding the FCPS budget, I think we all know that not giving the 7% raise that was bargained plus the 15% jump in healthcare premiums and the increase in overall healthcare costs will cause a dip in those retention numbers. |
LOL....quite a tantrum someone is feeling unappreciated in life. |
Haha spoiler it doesn't-keep the cookies too |
Can confirm. It’s anecdotal, I get it… My sophomore’s Spanish 3 teacher - who is very nice - barely speaks English and uses Google translate when sending emails to my student & myself. |
It is either Dr Reid or Karl Frisch who created this thread. |
Criticism? People on this forum call teachers dumb losers. That’s not criticism, that’s hate. |
And that only happens 1-3 times a year, so no one thinks that. |
DP. Sure, it’s hate. But it comes from people who don’t have a remote clue what teaching is like. It’s hard to take that criticism seriously. |
That's a severe abuse of the word "reason". |
this board makes it sounds like every teacher is heading for greener pastures and that no one will fill the roles. |
The problem is temporarily resolving itself. 1. The job market sucks for the ones who do want to leave. 2. Because the job market sucks, college students and others who couldn’t get a job are taking a stab at teaching (teacher trainees) and are back filling where a licensed teacher usually would be. Schools will hire anyone lately. 3. Jobs are being filled by teachers abroad. This same situation happened in 2008 when the economy went bad and teachers stayed at their jobs. Doesn’t mean the boost is permanent especially if things go sideways with “getting rid of the department of education”. |
The second part of that statement is correct. My neighbor is a mentor teacher for a local university that has a large education department. She said she used to supervise 40 student teachers every year and most used to go into teaching when they graduated. This year there are 15 students who are doing student teaching and a few of those have other plans outside of teaching. Most of the incoming teachers at my school are alternatively trained. They have a crash summer program before they start teaching. That’s it. Trust me. It’s not enough. |
I was one of those career switchers that went through an alternative program 12 years ago. The first year was hard, but by year 3 or 4, I was being recognized for my skills just as much as everyone else. |
