We are Eastern Orthodox so our Easter usually doesn't align with Western Easter. It does this year. Most of our services are in the evening to accommodate people's jobs. Obviously the school system won't cater to us as a religious minority with a different Easter, but we have so many services in the evenings during Holy Week that I imagine it will be difficult when my daughter is older and has more homework and tests. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday's services are especially significant and LONG. And our Easter service is until 2am on Easter Sunday (and then everyone celebrates together with food) so Monday would be a really rough day to have a test. I'd probably ask for an accommodation if she had a test scheduled for our Easter Monday. |
Even if you like it tied it's not even tied correctly. The week after Easter would accommodate people who celebrate Easter, the week before has Good Friday during the week off and school the day after Easter. |
West Coast now: my DD’s friends have 4 different weeks of spring break this year. Every week of April is covered. Midwest in the 90s: my suburban school district did it halfway between January and end of school, so usually the 3rd week of March. However, my parents worked for the city school district and their break was always tied to Easter. I spent many spring breaks home alone doing crafts and eating undercooked pasta for every meal. |
Which is exactly what my kid’s catholic school does, except for years like this year. People are rioting and many families are taking two weeks. |
Agree, last week of March or first week of April. Can you all get Youngkin to do this one last thing for parents before he goes? |
Your children can handle a day off of school, dipshit. We're leaving for spring break early because otherwise we couldn't afford it. |
What's happening this year? |
Probably one of the saddest posts on DCUM ever. |
I love it tied to easter. I love that different years spring break is at a different time. Some years we can travel to the national parks because they are open. Other years we go on vacation to Florida because it's closer to winter. They've already ruined the summer to where spring break is the only week we can go on vacation. The summer now is swim team followed by high school sports and nothing in-between. |
I would love it to be de-coupled from Easter. Easter is a religious holiday to me and we don’t like to travel on Easter. But we also would like a spring break. If the two were moved, I could have both.
Also, why is Easter the last day?? If I actually traveled to extended family, it would require the entire day of plane travel to get home. So instead of spending the religious holiday with family, I’m traveling. Easter should at a minimum be the first weekend of spring break, not the last day. Also, in general I think we need less religious holidays off school and more actual vacation days that are strung together, so decoupling Easter would be a start. |
(Im asking seriously) is Easter Monday actually a thing? I thought it was a term that ridiculed how DC students got rowdy and fought each other at places like the Zoo. I personally would love a 3 week break. spring break camps are much more enjoyable for kids than summer camps. Plus families could have cheaper vacations. I don’t like to travel during the heat of summer. |
Usually there are 4 simple M-F weeks of April but this year there are 3 M-F weeks and 5 total weeks that have at least 3 days in April so is March 31-April 4 the earliest break or April 28-May 2 the latest? |
It looks like your suburban district did it right but the DC schools did it wrong back then. |
Next year's calendar is the perfect example..... August 18-June 17 and that is students for teachers it's August 11-June 18 (August 5-June 18 for new teachers). It's basically a year round schedule for teachers but with only 2 breaks during the year instead of 3+ that year round schools do. |
That is awful! One of those needs to change! I get you love swimming and fall sports but NO TIME AVALIABLE in summer? That is HORRIBLE! |
