Are people on H-1B visas worried about the deportation plans?

But, MAGA don't want low skilled workers, so they do expect American born to take on those low paying jobs. MAGA want to allow in highly skilled workers, those people who will compete for high paying jobs with you and your kids.

Corporations have deep pockets, and they will ensure that Trump doesn't turn off that spigot of low paid, high skilled workers.

This exactly. They want to deport a bunch of low paid migrant workers doing hard labor that forms the basis of entire industries (a lot of our agriculture, the restaurant and hospitality industries) even though employers in those industries already struggle to find people who will take those jobs and taking that work force away will only raise prices further, exactly what Americans say they don't want.

But we'll hand out 100k+ jobs to wealthy foreign nationals with the idea that Americans are somehow incapable of getting degrees in computer science or finance or economics and that's fine.

It makes no sense.

Of course, Americans aren't incapable. So why don't they do it?

They do. Some of these employers prefer foreign labor because it's cheaper and it's useful to have captive employees. An H-1B employee is far less likely to job hop to increase their income because changing jobs means re-applying for their visa. That's very appealing to corporate employers for whom the H-1B process can be standardized and streamlined so it's not expensive for them. Meanwhile American applicants will never be considered for these jobs even though they are qualified.

I don't know how else to explain this but it's a scam.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Perhaps that's why you don't know how to explain it.

I work in immigration law but okay don't believe me.

I don't understand what you think you have to gain by keeping your head in the sand on this issue.

If there were enough neurosurgeons, engineers and high-level researchers to recruit within the US, no corporation would hire immigrants. Americans don't have the skills!!!!!

It really depends on the role. Yes in specialized medicine, sometimes an immigrant is truly your only option -- those people are in extremely high demand and it can take a decade or more to get the training you need to do the job. No wonder there is a shortage. Same with certain engineering specialties where American universities just do not offer these specialties or there aren't enough programs to meet demand (I've heard of this being true in certain specialties of hydraulics engineering for instance where there are African universities that have almost cornered the market on these jobs -- the US has to invest in those technologies if we want our citizens to be able to compete for those jobs).

But a lot of the jobs in banking and finance that are given to H-1B visa recipients? It's a bit of a scam. You don't think the US has enough citizens with econ degrees to fill those jobs? We do. But it's cheaper and easier to hire immigrants from India who have bog standard econ degrees from US universities or foreign universities. This is really not a necessity but the banks sure like it because it keeps the cost of this workforce down and makes it easier for them to fill roles because they get a surplus of applicants.

Sure, but no government program of that scale is without waste. Does Medicare fraud happen, sure. But we all know that it's not going anywhere. Investigae the fraud and penalize those those who are committing it.

That's nice but not the ethos of the incoming administration. Who also wants to cut Medicare.

exactly. Musk would be so mad if their costs go up.

I have seen this in big architecture firms too.

DP. If Trump decides to round them up and deport them you really think SCOTUS will not make it happen? SCOTUS gave Trump immunity from all laws and the constitution. Your experience working in immigration law has no relevance going forward.

730k H-1B visa holders
550k of their spouses/dependents with work visas.
1.28 million total.
72% Indian

Did you ever vote for this?

Fwd dot US runs a survey targeting immigrants and came up with this accurate number. I'm so tired of being lied to and the games played with data.

And they all want U.S. citizenship, are having babies, applying for Green cards etc.

What bothers you most? That there are "too many" Indians? Would it be fine if it was Germans or Swedes instead?

While Americans may want those jobs, it is unlikely they would ever get them. Do you think a company wants to go through all of the hassle of hiring layers and dealing with immigration. It’s because that’s who is the most qualified for the job. No one is stopping you from applying.

Exactly, sponsorship is 100k per person. If we can walk in a group of Americans who can do the job, we wouldn’t need to jump hoops for an H1.

My job in particular requires reading legal docs and knowledge of data science in a fast paced environment, Americans who qualify will always find a 2x higher paid job within 2 years.

They bully the non-Indian colleagues, steal credit and promote incompetent friends.

I stated this in another thread, but at my workplace they are not worried at all about their jobs, but VERY worried about the revolving door of grandparents who come and go on tourist visas to provide childcare. For some reason they think this is going to be cracked down on though I've heard nothing about tourist visas being changed.

There have been reports of legal aliens being detained “by accident”. It’s a shame, the illegals can’t truly be found. They change addresses, live under someone else’s name, work under another name, etc. It’s the legals that are easy targets.
