WTOP has more an better coverage. So does NBC Washington. Both are free. Why would I subscribe on the off chance that the post may cover the high school or even the district that my kids play in? In a small town, local schools are a reason to subscribe because the paper will actually write about them. Pick any large public school in the region and count the number of articles in a month and it will likely be zero. Expand that to the school system and it may be 1 or 2.

The Post never had that kind of hyper-local prep sports coverage, which the suburban papers (many now online) cover in detail. There must be about 30 to 40 high school conferences or districts in the Post’s local delivery area. It doesn’t make sense to cover all of it. The stories they do publish are however a worthwhile read. What is truly special is the All Met Sports spreads that include dozens and dozens of area athletes/schools.

Th NYTimes doesn’t even cover prep sports.

For other hyper local prep sports coverage— mostly fluff pieces, but fun for the featured schools—are the Friday Night Lights interviews and footage on DCNewsNow, WJLA, and with everyone’s favorite sports reporter, Chad Ricardo, on Fox 5.

SASN TV on Youtube also covers prep sports.

It would be a waste of resources for the Post to cover all of this, and would take up half the Sports pages. It would also be of limited value to the readership, except for the families with high school age athletes.

Lastly, in response to the above post, no one goes to WTOP for prep sports coverage.

There are less people who care about prep sports than you think. The post not bothering with local schools is why it's not worth subscribing to for sports. The Athletic does a better job at pro and college and is bundled with the NY times. The lack of local sports coverage is mirrored in a lack of metro coverage. By population, DC is smaller than Fairfax, Montgomery and Prince Georges yet gets the bulk of the coverage. If you live in DC, that's great, but not enough people live in DC to sustain a major news paper
