Then the coaches suck.

Any coach that “only coaches elite athletes” is advertising that they have zero skills or ability to develop, and can only “fine tune.”

Fine tuning youth athletes is a joke. The coaches must be absolute trash.

The reason HP doesn't take certain rec players without a reference from the coaching staff is because they wouldn't be able to do the drills during the training sessions. They don't have time to hold kid's hands. If a kid who can't play well goes in there all it will do is destroy their confidence seeing 30-40 other kids destroy them.

HP is actually really good, my players have use them in the past and they play at a very high level. I noticed that as older they get, the might need more of private training to help them where they need the most. However, at early ages it worked great for them.

HP is great of high volume touches and activity. It's indoors so weather doesn't matter and it's a full size turf field not some 20x40 soft room. In the past my kids easily get a thousands or two touches per session. Really adds up.

Two other suggestions- look into offerings with False 8 and Future Elitez based on your location.

Is there a Maryland/MoCo equivalent to these types of places like HP Elite & Beyond?

Specializing kids that early is stupid. All the best young athletes do multiple sports.

It’s clear you specialized in nagging and Karening on this blog. Why don’t you do everyone a favor (especially your poor husband) and nag your stupid comments on the box wine blogs.

This is a 100% American point of view. And the literature on “early specialization” doesn’t suggest what we think it does in America.

Look globally at football, everywhere else early specializes in footie (in the American sense of the term).

Yeah I’m sure you know the literature so well. 🙄

At 7, kids around the world are playing soccer among friends in their neighborhoods, not in specialized programs.

Specialized programs like…rec soccer 😂

Learn something! 8 year olds are going into the EPPP in the UK.

You realize this proves the point that the coaches are trash right?

They’re just setting up drills and letting kids run through them. They’re not adding value beyond facility and drill choices. “Fine tuning” is probably too generous.

So the coaches are trash if they run high level clinics for experienced players and don’t want to waste time on kids with a skill level far below the intended range of the clinic? Ok, got it.

First, HP does have younger age group clinics.

But yes, you do get how these clinics work right? These are fantastic for touches. Fantastic for reps. But you aren’t getting coaching at these. In fact, most of the coaches don’t have experience taking individual players through the phases of development, and to pretend that “kid vs come” or “kid vs target” or some other drilling is coaching or development is insane. The coaches at HP (and other programs) have no investment in the outcome, and no way to monitor the progress outside of the gym…And some of those coaches are or were good coaches, but programs like that are a waste of their talent and their talent atrophies.

My DC does a drill program too. It has its place! But it’s not coaching. Its facilitation.

You’re now arguing against something that the PP didn’t ever claim. Nice straw man.

Um once a week rec soccer is hardly “specializing”

OP posted that the kid wants to play soccer over winter......

Thanks blog police. Was just offering advice as that is what the OP wanted.

No problem. Learn how to read then...

Okay Karen. Kiss your husband with that mouth?

DP but I don't think either of those things mean what you think they mean.

Agree that cross training in the winter months with a sport like basketball is a great, better option. No need for a 7 year old to specialize so early. Kick the soccer ball around in your yard and stay conditioned with another formal sport in the winter.

There's nothing wrong with doing both - my kid plays in the rec basketball league and takes a once a week soccer skills class in the winter (through our rec league)
