If my child was doing 40 hours of hw every week, I would pull her out of the magnet program. That sounds extremely unhealthy.
Is this HW that is graded for completion? Why is she spending so much time on it. You should reach out to her teachers and get a clearer picture of what is really going on |
NP here. I have an RMIB graduate, plus kids who were in different magnet programs. My RM kid was well prepared for the program, wasn’t overwhelmed with work, and was very involved in a variety of sports and activities all 4 years. It was just right for them. Many of their peers were overwhelmed by the pace and rigor and thought it was too much. Let’s be clear that not all students in rigorous academic programs (including APs) are equally well-prepared and ready for the rigor of such programs. The teachers in those programs have taught the classes for multiple years, know the end goals, and have taught many students with different readiness levels. Parents are looking at a sample size of one (or a few). Teachers have sample sizes of 100s and also test results to validate their instructional approach. If your kid is consistently overloaded with work, either they aren’t using their time during class wisely, aren’t planning well, are studying inefficiently, or are taking too many advanced classes for their readiness level. Stop blaming teachers for everything. |
You’re wrong on both counts. Teachers don’t have full control over what they assign, particularly in AP and IB courses. We have requirements we have to meet, and it has to be done in less time since the tests occur a full month (or more) before the school year ends. Students DO have control. They can elect to take a less rigorous course if they can’t manage the workload in more advanced classes. They can also talk to their teachers, their counselors, etc., to evaluate their work habits. For example, perhaps the student isn’t using their time very effectively. (I have this conversation with students often. Two hours of studying is often 20 minutes of studying and 1.5 hours on a device.) I genuinely care about my students, and I resent posts like yours above. I’m not going to “cry you a river” because I need to feed my own children before getting back to school work this evening. I’m afraid I don’t have time to do that for you. |
Because she has eight subjects and they are all tough. This is what is expected. I have a clear picture, thanks. |
This is probably a junior in the stem magnet. It gets really bad that year with the extra class plus AP Lang and probably an AP world language and AP world on top of magnet classes and research. I could see how it could take more than 40 hours a week. I wish they would loosen the requirements a little. |
Exactly... |
You say that you have a clear picture, but you want teachers to reduce the workload. Which is it? You and your child want a rigorous education and bragging rights in a magnet program, but the workload is too much? |
