My take is it’s a combination of several things. The rising 17s might be the highest potential Metro team in a while and last season didn’t go as well as expected. The 17s coach from last season is the American U coach which would have created some complications because of an NCAA rule that prohibits a collegiate coach who coaches club from coaching a player who lives more than 50 miles from their institution - one of the key players on the team lives far enough away that they couldn’t play for him, so they had to come up with an alternative. Moving the 2 coaches who served as co-head coaches of last year’s 16 Travel up with the team probably wasn’t a preferred option given the disappointing season last year. Also, both of them have young kids and the rumor has been for a few years they were going to step away from coaching. While neither has fully left the club, both are listed as assistant coaches for the upcoming season (they have both been head coaches for years) possibly meaning they are hoping to play a lesser role. Finally, the rising 18s have not been able to get an open bid and it’s not clear how many of the team are going to college early and therefore won’t play club. As of now, one player from the team already went to IMG for her senior year and the rumor is at least one more is planning to leave for college early, and possibly at least one more. A few returning players that would likely have been on the 18s team have injuries that will force them to miss part or all of the season. So lots of uncertainty as to what the roster will look like. So my guess is that given all these factors, the club director moving to 17s was the best compromise. I'm sure the 18s families are disappointed, but the long time assistant who is moving into the head coach role is widely regarded as an outstanding coach so they should be fine. |
So are you not denying the allegations about the cursing? You seem to be very plugged in. |
I don’t actually know whether there were complaints about cursing from that team. Wouldn’t be surprised if there was cursing - both of those coaches are known to be pretty intense. Generally, I think a certain amount of cursing from coaches is tolerated in the club volleyball world for older age groups. If you spend much time near high school students you’re going to hear a lot of cursing from them so I think many parents accept it as inevitable. If a particular player or family has an issue with it, I would hope the club director would intervene and it would be stopped but maybe it’s hard to change old habits. |
I used to think the same about Metro so I totally get OP's perspective. I actually switched to Metro eventually and i don't regret it a bit. Whether my daughter will play D1 or not, I like Metro because (I will keep it simple!)
(1) They offer quality competition: playing in highest level (OPEN division) teaches players so much stuff that clinics, lessons can't offer. (2) Playing with best players drive my daughter to work harder (3) Price is actually reasonable compared to other clubs. I know lots of VA clubs say their higher fees include so much and is about the same, but I was an auditor and compared the numbers--- Metro is at least $1000 cheaper with everything counted for (new uniforms, HUDL, etc)---so do your research! (4) Metro offers the best clinic in the area. I've been to SOOOOOO many different club's clinic (MD, VA), but Metro training is the BEST hands down. I think every club has pros and cons and grass is always greener on the other side. Do I think Metro has no negatives? No, I won't be that blinded. But do I like Metro the best out of all the clubs in DMV? Yes. I believe Metro offers most out of any DMV clubs in the area. Everyone should do their own research and find answers for themselves. For me, Metro was the way to go. I know not ALL players will play at a brand-name academic or volleyball college, but I know starters on the team definitely go to those schools. Metro Travel has the most # of players committed to college, so that should say something. When players are moving into DMV area, their coaches actually tell them to go check out Metro. Thanks for reading! |
Please stop quoting anything with a players name. I’ve reported this thread and ask that all posts be deleted that are naming players. It’s inappropriate. |
Are certain teams within Metro less competitive than others? We are looking at the South teams since they are closer to our house. Would be U13. Just wondering if a complete waste of time to try out. |
I have the same question with regard to Central. |
Of course have no idea what level Your child is- but metro south is not high level- maybe intermediate, at most? Have no idea how their training is . You should check out the clinics and see what you/your daughter think. |
At U13 last year, Travel > North > South PW > East. There was a significant competitive difference at each level. Travel is one of the best teams in the region (#2), North was #21, South was ~#45, East was ~#73 (based on national ranks). For reference, there were 92 teams in the region last year. In general, there is a big difference between Travel and North, and an even bigger difference between North and the rest of the Metro regional teams. The exception last year was at 14U and 16U where the South PW team outperformed North in the rankings. Not sure if that's because of a easier schedule (North competes for Bids, South PW didn't last year) for South though. Metro Central tends to be the lowest performing of all the Metro regional teams. Last year their teams were the lowest ranked across all Metro teams for all ages. The best way to answer your question is to go to a clinic held for that particular region and age group and see what you think. Without knowing your skill/experience level its tough to tell anyone if trying out for a specific team is a good idea or not. |
The current skills clinics for Central are being offered now are combined with Travel. So totally skewed perception. They don’t differentiate. Plus for skills clinics they combine grades 6-12 and they break you down by skill level, with better players on one court, less skilled players on another. |
North and then everything else seems about right. As noted there are differences between age groups and some years different regional teams are better than others. The North coaches have mostly been around for a long time and are well regarded. Some of the coaches from the other regional teams have been around for a long time while other are new or less experienced. Definitely go to some clinics and see for yourself. Even the Sunday grade level clinics are combined Travel and Central. I think it would be better if they did them separately. For girls who are there hoping to be seen by the Central coaches, I suspect it's a bit intimidating to be with the Travel players as intermediate players. For the girls who are hoping to break into a Travel team but aren't already known by the Travel coaches, they need to be proactive and let the coaches know that the intend to try out for a Travel team so they aren't assumed to be there for Central. |
OSU women's volleyball has never been in ncaa final four since 1994, and not in ncaa tournament 2016-2019, , 2021 2022 sweet 16, 2023 Elite 8, why someone think that's a best volleyball program for a top athelet? |
Dude, you seem to have an obsession. Go out, breath in, breath out, then repeat if the idea "Metro sucks" comes back. You definitely have no idea what you are talking about, you are just trying to trash one of the top clubs in the area. You look quite pathetic, and not as knowledgeable as you believe. Just drop it, you embarrass yourself. |
I thought OSU volleyball had better ranking than what the PP said(will check). If it is true, OSU is not a good recruitment for a national top athelet. Any other club can do a better job get the athelet recruited. |
The poster with broken English strikes again. Bumps the thread bashing Metro without adding anything to the discussion. Promises to do homework (check on OSU ranking) and get back to us. There will be another opportunity to bash Metro when the poster bumps the thread again to share OSU ranking. Just imagine how much better Emmi Sellman would have done only if she was lucky enough to have this poster as her coach! Because Metro definitely failed Emmi Sellman to an outrageous degree. |
