Spending hundreds on homecoming dresses? Am I out of touch with reality?

What do you usually spend on a homecoming dress? Am I unreasonable?

We are by no means wealthy or rich, it seems expensive for one evening that is not Prom.

I thought a lot of the schools don’t have football anymore?

I would think everyone has their own individual budget and go from there. I wouldn’t worry about what everyone else is spending. My daughter won’t wear those $60 dresses with synthetic fabrics. But her best friend might. Everyone does what’s best for them.

We haven’t started talking about it yet this year, but I’m not spending anywhere close to $130. I actually expect she’ll recycle one that she’s already worn.

Watch a document or read up on Temu and SHEIN. No one should be shopping there.

Try a secondhand store or ask older friends for their old dresses. Lots of girls trade.

If you shop on a homecoming dress site there is no guarantee they are not marked up SHEIN factory crap.

They all wear trashy little slip dresses. Why would it cost more than $60 to look like a street walker?

Meh, you are grouchy. Now that I am 57 and on the chubby side of normal, I am glad I took the opportunity to wear cute clothing that showed off my nice figure when I was younger and had the chance!

Those SHEIN dresses aren’t really recyclable because they’ll be torn and out of shape quickly and the manmade fibers end up in the ocean.

You don’t need to shop on sites marketed towards homecoming. If it’s $60 it probably is from one of the Chinese companies. Some who have ethically made or sustainable clothes are Reformation, Stella McCartney, Mara Hoffman, Bloomingdale’s has some brands. There’s a lot more. Most of these type of brands have more tailored dresses with natural material, less skin tight than the typical cheap prom dress but worth it and you can wear it again because it’s not a prom / homecoming dress.

There’s looking good in your clothes when you’re younger and there’s looking cheap. The expensive looking subtleties in a well made dress that show off a figure are much better than the ones that are just tight all around.

Most parents cannot even buy themselves the brands you mentioned.

DD is a sophomore, and last year (and this year), her friends all seemed to buy dresses from Hello Molly or Lucy in the Sky (they're under $100).

+1 or Lulus.

I live in an area with showy people who love to light their money on fire and none of them are spending $130+ on a homecoming dress for their kid to wear once for an hour or two.

I don’t pick on sluts. Is that still a word people use ? It’s only cheap looking dresses from China. I don’t think you understand that the word cheap has many uses. And you’re 57, were you trying to insult people in your age group with the word granny? Stop using grandmothers to try to be nasty.

DP here. It’s obvious you do not have a teen daughter so I’m not sure why you are even here.
