is 9pm acceptable bedtime for a 7th grader?

What is with all the bedtime threads lately. May 6th grader has to be in bed no later than 9pm. I prioritize sleep over TikTok fads.

I think it’s because school is starting again so kids need to get back on a bedtime schedule!

They wake up early at around 6AM. Does anyone 7th grader go to bed at 9 or will they get poke fun of if they do??

They will absolutely be made fun of. That's part of the ice breakers. Introduce yourself and state your bedtime.

JFC. This is not something kids discuss. AT ALL. Are they tired at 9? Go to bed. If not stay up later. Who cares what everyone else is doing. Perhaps get off tik tok and parent your child.

Every person is different in terms of how much sleep they need, but the bigger issue really isn't how early or late a middle schooler goes to bed, but how early they are being required to get up due to start times (numerous studies have shown at that age we are fighting nature forcing tweens/early-teens to get up that early).

However long you can keep an earlier bedtime the better. The older they get the later they will stay up. While (or if) you still control bedtime, have it be as early as possible and no screens in room.

That’s pretty early. Depends on your DC of course. Ours is fine with bed at 10:30 and up at 6:30. Good sleeee, no screen time, lots of athletics.

This is why I voted to make middle school start time later. Trying to get my kid to go to sleep earlier doesn't really work.

Get off TikTok. Those aren't real people. They are engagement bait.

Wow, up at 6? I feel so sorry for your kids. Our high school doesn't start until 9, middle school starts at 9:30. An 8:30 bedtime for a teenager is a punishment.

We do phone off and in bed by 9, lights out by 9:30. This first week of school my 8th grader has been asleep by 9 every night. The early schedule is a hard adjustment. We had some baseball games where we got home after 9, for those we would do snack in the car on the way home, shower and then some downtime. Lights out by 10. Those were the exception, not the rule.

We aim for 9. One night a week an activity ends at 9 and so that is later. They have to get up so early. If he goes to be at 9 and wakes at 6 - that still only 9 hours.

They make it a point to go to bed earlier when they’ve miscalculated the night before or have a test. This is a pretty low risk example of slowly introducing more freedom/responsibility. We had bedtime rules in place until 7th grade.

+1

Kids in high school having to go to bed at 9 is nuts.

The kids in high school going to bed at 9 are ad hoc, I'm pretty sure. There is no way to have 9PM as a standard bedtime across the week because of extra curricular activities, tests, projects, etc. The kid who can do that every single day of the week is likely the kid who will face some challenges when applying to colleges.

Did you find this thread via Recent Topics by any chance? No FCPS middle school starts that late, AFAIK they all start before 8. Our bus shows at 6:45-ish.
