What did you think of this years Olympics?

Highlights for me:

- Cole Hocker and Yared Nuguse gold and bronze in the men’s 1500 (running)
- GOAT Katie Ledecky winning the 800 and 1500fr
- US women setting a new world record in the 4x100 medley relay (swimming)
- Amit Elor’s gold in wrestling
- Kristen Faulkner’s come-outta-nowhere sprint surge at the end of the women’s road race for gold (cycling)

I thought the opening ceremony was cr@p and I didn’t even get as far as the Last Supper mockery. Didn’t watch the closing ceremony. The E. Coli filled Seine was a disappointing black mark on an otherwise enjoyable Olympics. Looking forward to Milan in 2026.

All of this!

Also Masai Russell, 5’4” hurdler from the DMV won gold in the 100m hurdles and 16 year old Quincy Wilson, another DMV athlete, ran in the qualifying round of the 4x400 relay. The DMV left its mark on this Olympics.

Yeah he ran a 47 in the 400 which is a high school time

With an injured hamstring in by far his biggest meet ever, he hadn't ever run internationally! Think about it this way - the US already had a number of injuries and sickness to deal with. By running in that prelim he was able to save the legs of another runner and then they were fresh(er) for the finals. His best time is 44.2, I think we will see sub 44 from him next season and by 2028 he will be #1 in the world.

And yet, he was in the Olympics and you will never be.

What kind of small d energy person are you?

Loved it. We had considered going but it seemed like it was going to be just too overrun and tickets hard to come by. But then there seemed to be plenty of space at some events even if they weren't the marquee events. I need to remember this when it comes to LA and just go. We went to Atlanta in 96 on the spur of the moment and it worked out great.

Really liked the 4 screen split screen on Peacock to watch multiple events. Liked most of the more creative approaches to commentating - Snoop, etc. Hated the opening ceremonies and Kelly and Peyton were not great.

Loved that athletes seemed to be enjoying it and supporting other events.

We loved seeing China own the American crybabies and their loaded excuses.

I loved the Olympics. Gymnastics, swimming and track were all great. The team stadium jumping completion was great too.

Don’t you have to win to own anyone? What an odd troll.

I learned never to do a sport that involves judges

Same here!

I am happy that France and the French people can take pride that they did a great job. No mass terrorist attacks, places stayed open in August until after, people were more tolerant of tourists.
The opening and closing ceremonies had their quirks but in LA there may be foreign concerns about our flag worship. To each their own.

I’ve been watching the Olympics since Ben Johnson (Canadian sprinter) days. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen athletes so supportive of each other. It was so refreshing! Competitors but not enemies.

All in all I thought it was great this year. Paris was a splendid setting! Some really dramatic moments, hilarious memes, new athletic stars! I loved Snoop and Flavor Flav cheering on our athletes. The South Koreans taking a selfie with the North Koreans. The Chinese gymnast who adorably bit her medal after seeing the Italians on the podium do it. All the spectacular DMV representation including a Bullis student! Breaking was a first! 12 year old skaterboarders with such courage! Biles and Chiles bowing down to Andrade! Imane Khelif winning gold despite all the haters! This was a memorable one!

I watched more than I thought I would. The American women killed it.

Paris is unmatched as a setting. Overall, I loved it.

Mixed bag. Loved the balloon torch and Celine, thought the last supper bit was stupid and cringe but not worth the fuss some folks made, thought the terrible can-can dancing was embarrassing. Angry about the gymnastics floor final and how both Ana and Jordan were treated, and especially the horrific racist abuse Jordan encountered. I’m angry enough about it that I don’t that I want to watch more gymnastics. Loved pommel horse guy and Simone, though, just may skip for a while otherwise. Also angry about the gaslighting from the IOC with respect to the likely XY boxers (and in fact that’s led me to rethink my entire approach to Caster, who I now think is in the wrong). Disliked the breakdancing, especially the Australian lady who took the place of less privileged dancers. Loved the adorable Chinese winner who bit her medal. Loved the Turkish silver medalist. Loved the camaraderie of all the swimmers and the women’s track and field events. Loved the women’s soccer tournament which was high-quality and so much better than the World Cup (unlike the men). Loved the men’s basketball tournament. Hated the child rapist representing the Netherlands and can’t believe he was allowed in the building, but love the audience members that booed him. Liked Peacock’s streaming coverage. Liked the marathon runner with her hijab.

So, mixed.
