It makes no sense. Explain to me like I've five please. I would think they would want only electronic voting so "suitcases of ballots" can't be supposedly used next election.

There is a difference between using paper ballots and faking paper ballots. Are you suggesting electronic voting machines are incapable of being hacked?

DP - yes, I’m absolutely suggesting it’s impossible to “hack” an electronic voting machine. Impossible, as in “it CANNOT be done”.

Take your paranoia back to Fox News. They paid 700,000,000 to probe to everyone that voting machines can’t be hacked.

This very good news, Only lpaper ballots will count, this means there won't be any voter fraud. Lets hope this happens in all 50 states. This guy should run for VP he very smart and very popular in Virginia.

It’s terrible news. Especially since whenever fraud is attempted it is perpetrated by Republicans, often using paper ballots.

Digital is far more secure.

Youngkin’s efforts to disenfranchise Virginia voters is revolting. He should be imprisoned.

Cue the conspiracy theories in November when Trump appears to be winning Virginia weird counties outside NOVA and it takes extra long for Fairfax results to come in (which always happens but now will be longer) and then VA goes by a solid margin to Harris/Walz.

+1. This doesn't do anything new.

However, I wish they'd bring back curtained voting booths. The little cardboard things provide no privacy.

It's not news at all. It's what Virginia has already been doing. And there has been no fraud.

Maryland has used all paper ballots since the 2016 election.

WHAT?!?

Maryland is suppressing people’s votes!

Then you take it to a scanner. It will reject your ballot if you made a mistake (like voting for two choices for an office that allows only one choice) so you know right away if it's OK or not.

The paper ballots are kept as backup. The scanner machine results are sent electronically (and have a USB stick backup) to the head office. We drive the paper ballots to the head office after polls close, in one of our cars, but there has to be another judge from a different party sitting in the car also. I guess we better hope we're not carjacked.

The electronic touch-screen voting machines we have in every polling place are primarily for those with accessibliity issues, like they are hearing or vision impaired and can't fill a paper ballot. It produces a paper ballot result for them. We prefer people use the paper ballots (pen-marking your own ballot) because it's faster and we have more of those stations at the polling place.

I’m an election officer in Fairfax county and our process is very much like what is described above. We have a machine called an Express Vote that marks the ballot for the voter using a touchscreen or keypad. A card is then printed out and is inserted into the scanner just as all the other paper ballots are.

I’ve been an officer for eight years and, as far as I know, Fairfax county doesn’t offer electronic voting as an option. There is always a paper ballot and those are kept in storage by the county for a number of years after each election.

Why did they do away with the machines the showed who you voted for and asked if that was correct? One could easily program a machine to flip a vote

I’ve been voting in Virginia for more than 30 years, but I don’t remember the machine you’re describing. Is there a link to a picture maybe?

The DS 200, which is the ballot scanning machine used in Fairfax county, just counts the votes on the ballots as they are scanned. The information is saved on two thumb drives, and the actual paper ballots are also saved in sealed boxes which all the election officers present sign. So it is entirely possible to hand count the paper ballots to back up the numbers the machine’s printout and thumb drives show, if that were ever necessary.
