Sounds super fun. |
What does recruiting look like for summer swim? |
It's sort of crazy. A few years ago we were Division D. |
*cough* Kingfish and MVP *cough* |
There are two teams in Division A (see above - one just moved up to A) that aren't part of a community pool. They rent pool space for summer swim, so basically can recruit kids from anywhere (who are willing to drive for meets or practice). |
Hawthorne recruits too. |
I figured they did...but they're SO far out in BFE I can't imagine people from closer to DC would go out there. Right? They also seem like they're falling off given how close some of the scores were this year compared to the last few. |
MVP does not recruit. It's true that there are no geographical restrictions, but 95% of the kids live in Upper NW DC, close to our pool. There are a few kids who travel to our team, but it's not because they were "recruited." Some have a longstanding relationship with our head coach, others come because they have friends on our team. But there's no recruiting going on. The biggest advantage MVP has is that there's very little competition for summer swim teams in the area. |
Your coach seems great! I can see how there would be a following. Loved watching his enthusiasm and clear connection with each kid - coaching them after each race. |
MVP tried to recruit my kid at divisionals last year. |
I’m pretty sure the Rays are moving from MCSL. It got boring for them. They’re going to start in PMSL Division F and try to work their way up. SBP wanted a Montgomery County rival. |
MVP does not recruit and it does not need to do so. As this poster notes, it is the only team in the upper NW area. Kids outside of that area come because the coach is wonderful. Many of the assistant coaches are alumni who are loyal to the coach. There are all levels of swimmers on the team. Summer swim league is supposed to be fun and MVP embraces that attitude wholeheartedly. |
sbp parent here and lol cheverly dominated divisionals! impressive! and we really like mvp's coach! |
The MVP coach did not try to recruit your kid at Divisionals last year. |
Correct. It was not the coach. An MVP parent rep did. It was very weird and my kid was uncomfortable. And for all of the people saying “MVP doesn’t recruit” - yes they do. Kids in club swim tell other kids they should come swim for MVP. Parents tell other parents they should come swim for MVP. And MVP can take them, because they’re not a membership pool. Agree that the coach is great. |
