Seems pretty slowed down to me, did he score this summer? Don't conflate this Copa for anything other than Argentina's squad being currently stacked especailly with CM's, they literally swapped out that whole unit in extra time and bam Paredes slide tackle, pass to Lo Celso, one time thorugh to Lautaro gol. All new subs, two CM's with Dominguez not even playing this tournament. Similiar to spain they are loaded with average sized technical beasts in midfieldl definetly no longer about Messi, so yes, slowing is right way to put it.

No. Without his athleticism he would have been crushed by defenders. There is no one who was at Messi level of athleticism in his prime. If a defender can get their hands on a player they can control the player. Messi has the IQ but he also runs by and around players. Most people mistake running by someone as soccer IQ.

Messi has lost speed and quickness. How is he looking now when he is not running away from defenders? If it was just Soccer IQ he would still be playing in Europe and not a liability on his national team.

liability? more of luxury. He did not impact the Copa but his brain and prescence make for far more than a simple liability. I'd argue few can be effective at 35+ yeasr at this level without a soccer brain becaue of all this things your referenced. thanks for making my point again, Still not getting it.

Np and you're full of it. Speed and agility and smarts matter. You can't play in the big leagues if you can't keep up. Go look at the clip of crazy Kyle Walker shutting down both Messi and Mbape who were breaking away with only Walker defending. He shut them both the h3ll down. Messi just completely stopped running. This was Man City vs PSG.

au contraire baseball may be best comp becasue there are plenty of non-athletes excelling at baseball. Messi would be a non-athelete in any other sport he is a footballer throught and through and picked the best sport for his body type, which is not a superior athlete. My point is the best athletes in other sports comparision, the best athletes on a baseball field are the middle infieders and most outfielders (the non-power guys who can actually run). American football or basketball I agree are best comps because of the starting and stopping that occurs in those games, cutting, and in game transitions

Wow. Your post has no basis in reality. Messi was an incredible athlete. His estimated 40 time would be in the 3.9-4.1 range but because of his build his acceleration in the first 5-10 yards is greater vs that number. He would dominate in every sport but basketball and he would be very good in that. His quickness, coordination, vision, speed and speed with ball are seen only once in a generation if that.
There are no non athletes in pro sports. Each pro athletes is a great athlete and there is small difference that differentiates them among other pro athletes. At that level a 2% speed difference is significant. A slow pro athlete is slow relative to their peer group of other pro athletes.
