You'd be surprised at the rigor of many of the international applicants, lots of whom are coming from international schools that offer AP courses. |
Some of us have similar hooks so PPs comments were helpful. My kiddo is URM and also has other URM legacies in their class plus nationally ranked URM athletes. PP identified enough to know whether her/his advice applied to individual readers. |
Tell it to the PP who thought that URM hook wasn’t worth mentioning - otherwise unhooked? Hooked is hooked. |
No, you still don’t get it. Are you pregnant, or not? You can’t be a little pregnant; you can be a little hooked. Merely hooked (athletes aside) still probably means rejection; double and triple hooks means likely (but not definite) acceptance. |
PP mentioned URM status. I'm not understanding the lack of comprehension here. Secondly, this is a diverse board and region, yet the assumption seems to be that we're all UMC and White. That's likely where the disconnect is for you. PP's post indicated to me that while URM, they were not FGLI or legacy. That was important context for my URM and MC household. If it isn't helpful for you, that's fine, but that doesn't mean that it was unhelpful or misleading overall. |
| It’s not necessarily bad in every case to have fewer than four years of science but in general it’s best to have four years of all core subjects |
| Does college count the years of foreign language taken in middle school? |
The level, not the number of years, are what matter, as well as the remainder of the transcript. Level 3 is sufficient for top schools if the rest of the transcript is sufficiently rigorous. |
+1. Whether 3 is ok would depend on the rest of the transcript. 4 years would be ideal. |
Nope |
This is not necessarily true. If you are not taking “core courses” all 4 years of actual high school, it may or may not be a problem. I do think it is funny, though, how some of the same people saying you must have 4 years of high school science might say 3 years of foreign language is OK — as long as you took foreign language in middle school. Kids don’t take science in middle school? On another note, it is presumed science= rigor. So why are these STEM kids and their parents starting all these threads about avoiding foreign language. Hmnnn. |
I get it, but you are incorrect about “otherwise unhooked.” Hooked is hooked. Of course, double and triple hooked is better than single hooked. However, they are ALL hooked. |

Schools enroll a range of students. Some may decide to only put out a certain type of student as a guide while others want prospects/families to see that range. I didn't necessarily like that my son eliminated two schools based on the guides, but so be it. |
