That's because Rockville is surrounded by the more larger schools (Magruder, Wheaton, Richard Montgomery, etc.). |
Wood parent here. It’s not great, but I don’t think it’s any worse than all the other Middle schools |
My kid was at Flower Valley when this happened so I remember it also. But I think this could happen anywhere, FWIW. I feel like I read stories from various MS and HS around the county on a regular basis. |
I had a kid who remembered that too, they were in 8th grade when it happened. That school doesn't seem like it hasn't changed much. Looking back at last year, seeing a group of kids trying to start a h0m0ph0b1c club and a security guard in the school showing p*@n to an underaged minor. It sounds way too messed up now. |
My kids go to J. West MS, I always thought Wood was the worst out of all the middle schools to be honest, lol. |
Oh, I forgot about that story! That was nuts. I have a kid at Wood MS now and it's definitely messed up, but interesting to hear that people think West is 'better'. My niece is at West and it sounds similar, but who knows, I guess. https://wjla.com/news/local/rockville-middle-school-security-guard-charged-earle-b-wood-varvie-daughtry-showing-sexual-images-porn-child-maryland-dmv-montgomery-county-moco-mcpd-mcps-police-crime-abuse |
And why do you think you have any sense of "all the middle schools"? |
DP A lot of us have kids who play sports with kids from other MS. When you spend a lot of time at the soccer field with other parents from other MS, you often compare notes. Wood and West are pretty close to each other, so we come across the parents often. |
8th gr wood parent here, and I’m glad to be done with the school. The admin is weak imo. But there are dumb MS kids doing stupid things everywhere, there are bullies everywhere. The kids are not unique to wood. I think a lot that happens in other schools just doesn’t make the news sometimes. Re the swastika thing? That happens more than you would care to know, even in elementary school. These kids don’t always know what they’re doing when they’re drawing it, or they’re drawing it because they know it’s controversial—they’re not tiny neo nazis in the making. |
Most MCPS HS are remarkably similar. They use the same curriculum and hire from the same teacher pool. Yes, bulk test averages may differ but that's just a reflection of an area's median HHI. The only real diff between these two is probably the IB at RMIB. This is available to everyone in 11th and 12th I believe, but If Rockville also has an IB program I guess it's a wash. Just visit both schools and pick the area where you and your kids feel most comfortable. |
It's not either West or Wood, it's pretty much all the middle schools. Kids are still maturing even when they're like 11-14. Don't make your school feel bad though, because maybe if you're kids still in middle school, they have time to progress and look back at what they were like back then and they'll probably regret it, for good.. |
Rockville IB peer cohort is weaker than RM IB peer cohort, so it's not a wash. There's a link to the IB and AP exam results up thread. I agree that MS just sucks everywhere, but it's also true that generally, the higher the SES of the cluster, the "better" the school. RM draws from a higher SES than Rockville HS. |

I have a senior at Rockville who had a great experience at Wood and a great experience at RHS, including in the IB program, with smart, motivated peers. Maybe not as many as at another school, but enough to give him a great group of friends, excellent academic experiences, success in his activities and his goals for college.
RM is much larger than RHS, which might matter to you. We liked the smaller size for our kid. |
Very funny fact on it's own, the kid who brought the fake gun at Wood actually recently got arrested about a week ago. He was at 2 years at RHS and then spent the other 2 years at Richard Montgomery. He probably was at the Richard Montgomery football team this year too. |
Where's your evidence on that? |
