I cut it out and noticed no difference.

If I have the occasional diet coke will that work against my weigh loss goals?

OP - just enjoy your diet coke. Don't overthink it.

This is literally the dumbest thing I've read on this forum in months, and that's saying a lot.

Signed, 44yo male, with an 11% bodyfat who consume 2-3 coke zeros a day.

I used to drink one every afternoon and felt kind of gross afterwards. Then I switched to seltzer water and feel better. Maybe I was dehydrated and needed the water but I felt better and kept this up. I only drink it now when I go out to restaurants or on occasion when I'm out doing something else, so once or twice a month. It is not addictive because I had no trouble stopping.

Look up the research on carbonation and fat.

Artificial sweeteners do not increase your hunger or the desire to eat more sugar-filled foods.

OP, we all have our small vices. No need to chase perfection.

Because it's delicious and the caffeine perks me up.

Wrong. It tasts awful. You drink it because you are addicted.

This is such a wild response. It tastes awful *to you*

Plus 1. I think in moderation it is fine. Do what works for you!!

Here is one: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28228348/ "These results implicate a major role for carbon dioxide gas in soft drinks in inducing weight gain and the onset of obesity via ghrelin release and stimulation of the hunger response in male mammals." FYI: Ghrelin is a hormone that increases your appetite and encourages your body to store more fat.

That study was in rats, but newer research is confirming the usual: same for humans. Also, research shows that carbonated beverages blocks the thirst/quenched messaging system in the brain, which is why thirst is not always satisfied by carbonated beverages even after the body has been adequately hydrated. So even though your body has had enough, your brain doesn't know it and will let you keep drinking.

Does it taste better than it did in the 90s? Because that’s the last time I tried it and it was awful.

But I guess people also like IPAs which taste like pine pitch so whatever.
