US News 2024 rankings

The DC Rankings may be close but the spread Nationally is very telling. Don't be angry with Walls. Its a special place.

Say what you want about great schools in MD and VA, but the only school that beat out Walls in the DC "Metro Area" Ranking was Thomas Jefferson in Alexaxndria #1 in DC Area Metro Ratings (Walls #2) and #14 Nationally. Every other school in the area can "please step to the side", DC is coming through.

Do VA and MD have pure application only high schools like Walls and Banneker other than TJ?

These rankings make no sense to me. A big part of the ranking depends on the state assessment test -- but VA, MD, and DC all use different assessments, and I have no way of seeing if one state is using an easier assessment than another. My impression is that VA and MD left PARCC because their students were largely failing PARCC.

I agree. I don't put a lot of stock in US News and World Report because I know how fickle and subjective their College Ratings are. I wish there were more exhaustive rankings or at least evaluations that gave a good idea of the pros and cons of schools. I feel like those of us who have the time to read this board extensively are privileged and I wish finding a good school for our kids was easier. MySchoolDC helps, but I feel like actual good standardized testing which was used throughout the US nationally would be even more helpful.

DCIs high school started in 2016, not 2014. First graduating class was 2020.

Sure but didn’t those kids start at DCI MS in 2014?

Thinking you might go back to school to learn the importance of an apples to apples comparison.

There are no other magnet highschools in Fairfax county public schools other than TJ. I can't speak for Arlington county.

MD has magnets. VA has another whole separate program called AAP which self selects and tracks and starts early in elementary and goes to 8th grade. Then many but not all kids then apply to TJ if interested.

So VA really has the mose self selection of the students the earliest. It’s important to know that.

USN&WR has a separate ranking for magnet schools but defines magnet schools as "public high schools that offer specialized courses, often designed around a theme."

So TJ counts as a magnet school but Walls and Banneker do not--even though DCPS explicitly refer to Walls and Banneker as "magnet" schools.

Moreover, USNWR just lumps together selective and non-selective high schools. So, they are comparing Stuyvesant in NYC (which only 2-3% of applicants a year) or Walls (which also only accepts a small fraction of students, even though it has a much different admissions rubric than Stuyvesant and other NYC magnets) to schools which accept 100% of kids who lives in bounds or 100% of those who scores highly enough in a lottery. So, it is not really a fair comparison.

Sure.

Q: Are the VA AAP programs ranked separately or are the scores folded into the overall schools for US News and Report?

A: The scores are folded into the overall school so not an apples to apples comparison with other self-selected or lottery highschools.

AAP is only in Fairfax county.
