Yeah! We should celebrate that DC performs so well with two top schools nationally!

They cherry pick their student bodies (including taking top students from Basis, Latin, DCI, etc.), so I certainly hope so.

A better comparison would be how they rate compared to other selective/magnet schools in large urban centers around the U.S.

Walls is ranked #68 nationally and DCI is ranked #778

That’s a big difference.

The 2 are not comparable. Walls self selects and DCI doesn’t.

I would agree that DCI does a really good job with all the students, not just the higher performing ones.

It’s a good school with a very diverse student body. Throw in a college like campus with great facilities, lots of extracurriculars and sports and it’s not hard to see why it has become so popular. It’s the closest middle and high school EOTP similar to what you can get in the burbs.

The academics at DCI are awful, especially compared to suburban schools. It’s not even close!

And DCI is ranked fourth in DC which means only that’s it’s better than some really terrible DC schools.

A lot of the top schools in the rankings are selective/magnet.

No, not really. If you look at IB average scores of the suburban schools, there is not much of a difference.

Why is the insecurity always so high in these threads?? You did your research; you know why the school you chose is the best for your kid considering all the circumstances. Recognize that everyone else did the same thing and came up with different answers.

What I found interesting was that of the 3 schools with 6-12, Basis and DCI made top 10 in both middle and high school but Latin did not

Because many people didn’t do their research, have buyer’s remorse, and need to rationalize their bad choice.

Walls #1 in DC, #68 Nationally
Banneker #2 in DC #96 Nationally
Basis #3 in DC, #400 Nationally
DCI #4 in DC, #788 Nationally
McKinley #5 in DC, #1032 Nationally

The DC Rankings may be close but the spread Nationally is very telling. Don't be angry with Walls. Its a special place.

Say what you want about great schools in MD and VA, but the only school that beat out Walls in the DC "Metro Area" Ranking was Thomas Jefferson in Alexaxndria #1 in DC Area Metro Ratings (Walls #2) and #14 Nationally. Every other school in the area can "please step to the side", DC is coming through.

OMG who cares. You really think they know anything about DCPS? That’s such a joke.

Do people really still follow U.S. News reporting on this any more? The college rankings feel as dated as U.S. News (who reads that any more?) and did the high school rankings ever get any traction at the best of times?

I mean, it's very imperfect, but there is some truth in there. The top 5 high schools they picked are quite good. Same with the top five college they identify.

Ranking or not, some of the measurable objective data is informative and helpful. I appreciate objective data which doesn't lie as opposed to anyone posting on an anonymous board.

The only thing I would change is to rank JR slightly higher, maybe? But looks pretty good for a non-human, data derived ranking.

I think the colleges do?
