That is what it's been called for decades

That’s what it’s called.

My god, no one wants to type out Urbana-Champaign and "U of I" is vague to anyone not from Illinois. Everyone understands "UIUC."

In the area/Big10/midwest you have Uof Indiana, hence why it's UIUC.

Also there is a UI Chicago location. So once again, hence why UIUC is used

Not that difficult to understand

OP here. This is based on friends' and neighbors' kids (HS classes of 2020-2023) with similar stats who did not get into top eng programs but were accepted to UMD eng (some with merit, some not).

It's possible; but did you also talk to all the similar kids who did not get in?

Maybe you could call it a likely, but I wouldn't call UMD a safety for anyone. Especially for Montgomery County, where competition is very stiff.

I really thought that OOS for Purdue & UIUC are targets with high GPA, rigorous classes, and high SAT! I'll ask kid to find other schools to add to the list.

With an impacted like engineering, you might need to adjust everything by a tier. (That is, everywhere will be more difficult to get into especially since he won't be alone with that GPA, coursework, and SAT. Respect the competition!)

They probably are targets, but there are only so many spots available.

In the old days we called it "Chambana". I wonder when Urbana got top billing?

You are correct, OP. With those stats, UMD is likely. But, like another poster, I wouldn't call it a safety. But, I don't call anything a safety. It's not accurate, and it sets up a less than appealing association.
Normally, I wouldn’t, but UMD admits very much by stats, and your kid has them. The few kids at my kid's mcps magnet that didn't get in, didn't have the tier of stats your kid has. It's good to have a variety of likelies just in case. I posted some targets and likelies my kid's list on the first page.

Same poster. Meant to add that the scoffing PP is correct about merit. It used to be much more predictable and seems more arbitrary this year.

That’s how I wrote it (on paper) when I was researching engineering schools 30 years ago.

Ok, well, as someone from Illinois, I'm telling you that you sound like an idiot. It's U of I.

Agree. Indiana is IU. Iowa is just Iowa. Never heard “UIUC” in the Midwest. Virginians would faint if everyone started referring to UV-C & VaT.

Friend from Ann Arbor's Nat'l Merit Finalist son applied to 15. Let's face it....high SAT males from particular locales are not rare...in fact...kind of generic.

I had two students with similar stats as your student HoCo not MoCo and both got into UMD honors one was a full Banneker Key and one got no merit aid.

OP here. Thank you for your list. I will ask kid to revise their list and consider applying to a couple more.
And wanted to add that most of friends'/neighbors' kids got into to UMD honors but not all. Pitt/Penn State seem to be large school backups for some...there's two on my street that didn't get into UMD and are going to Pitt (not for eng).

There is no “Uof Indiana.” There’s not even a University of Indiana.
