Car you drive and HHI: 2024 edition

lol people pretend it has to do with their “superior values” but really it’s bc of the ridiculously high number of carjackings/break-ins around here.

This isn’t me, but I wouldn’t judge someone who has to spend an hour+ sitting in DC traffic everyday for wanting to spend that time in a comfortable ride that they love.

They will have to pry this car from my DH and mine dead fingers before we give it up. And yes, we share a car.

I'm surprised at how many of y'all are reporting just one car. Are you single? Or part of a couple and have just one car?

I’m a PP with one car and three kids. My DH WFH and my job/schools/daycare are all within ten minutes of our house. It is a HUGE hassle but I hate the idea of maintaining two vehicles.

But are the $$$ cars really more comfortable? Maybe they just love showing off for an hour in traffic?

I agree. I personally love cars and would have bought a much nicer one than I did but I don’t drive that much. I bike to work or I take the metro. I drive a couple days a week to pick my kid up from school or taking her to dr appts or going to the grocery store. Spending a lot of money on a car didn’t make sense. But if I still lived in Atlanta (where I grew up), and spent my life in my car, I wouldn’t hesitate to spend more on it. We make 305K and have a 2019 Honda Accord and a 2016 Toyota Camry. We only have two cars because our child has medical issues and we kinda panicked when she was a baby and bought a second car so there would always be one available.

Not sure what it’s like in other counties, but Arlington taxes vehicles. The older your car, the less taxes you pay every year. So that’s another reason you see older cars on the road… people actually want to buy and own their cars for a long time. And more incentive to only own one car if you live near public transit.

Another PP with a one car household. We’re 2 adults and 2 kids and we live close to public transit. DH takes the car to work most days because his job isn’t easily metro accessible. I go to the office 1-2x per week and take the metro. Kids walk to school.
