I also support the freedom to protest and debate, and I’m all in favor of criticizing Israel’s government and its actions. But… So many of these protesters have gone too far. Calling for the destruction or elimination of Israel. Supporting terrorism. “Resistance is justified.” Targeting people in the US simply because they are Jewish. To me, these things cross the line and deserve condemnation. |
Are you a free speech absolutist? Like everyone no matter what should be able to speak and protest? Would you support the free speech rights of Nazis? If you’re not an absolutist then you’re just playing favorites. |
NP. I saw a video tonight where the “kids” you are defending were screaming “Go back to Poland” at Jewish students. Something like 96% of Polish Jews were killed by the Nazis. Is this the side and behavior you are defending? |
+1000 Asking for multiple repeat 10/7, telling Jews to go to Poland, stabbing a Jewish student in the eye, telling Hamas with signs the Jews on campus should be their next target. This is not a protest it’s just plain old antisemitism. I hope Israel’s population swells with American Jews who have had enough. |
It’s hardly one-sided bigotry, and yet I suspect you don’t even understand that. |
What's more, USC and Columbia are private universities so making the free speech argument is questionable no matter who is speaking. |
This should get shut down. Sick of this country turning in to a battleground every time there’s a new cause du jour. |
Go ahead and link articles where pro Israel students physically assaulted pro Palestinian students. You’ll find next to none while there are numerous reports of the opposite situation. |
Views of what is actually happening at the Columbia protests are mixed:
“Noah Levine, 20, a sophomore at Columbia and an organizer with Jewish Voice for Peace, said they found the rabbi’s comments “deeply offensive.” “I’m a Jewish student who has been in this encampment since its inception,” they said. “I’m also a student who has been organizing in this community with these people since October, and even before that, and I believe in my heart that this is not about antisemitism.” But Xavier Westergaard, a Ph.D. student in biology, said the mood for Jewish students was “very dire.” “There are students on campus who are yelling horrible things, not about Israelis only or about the actions of the state or the government, but about Jews in general,” he said.” More here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/21/nyregion/columbia-protests-antisemitism.html Certainly threats and violence should not happen and the University should investigate and have cameras monitoring. However, students do have the right to protest and it is not antisemitic for someone to say or hold a sign that indicates they believe Israel’s current actions are wrong. |
If this is happening Columbia security should rig up cameras or use drone cameras to catch the perpetrators in the act and arrest them for hate speech. However, based on the accounts I’ve read these would be isolated incidents and so those protesting peacefully should be allowed to continue. Pro Israelis should have the right to protest too peacefully if they want but protesting that you want to kill more people is not a good look. |
So scared of what? Name one Jewish student that has been maimed, killed, suffered any injury or slight injustice. I can name at least a dozen Palestinian-Americans that have been killed, maimed, blacklisted, lost their jobs and livelihoods. Jewish students are so violent that they want to shut down the earnest protest of others so that they may not feel the guilt that arises from the barbarity with which they identify. |
