Flying first/ business class

Anonymous
Family members NW mid 8 figures and only started flying business in their mid-70s. They figured at that age why not make travel more comfortable.

HHI around $1m, and we fly first class for red eyes.

Im a divorced mom of elementary schoolers making $300k. I don’t bother for domestic flights but for vacation trips to europe with my kids, I always at least pay the $550 to get us on the Polaris upgrade list, and will just buy the upgrade in cash if I can get it for under $1k/person or so. I used to resist doing this thinking it was a waste of money to pay so much to be more comfortable for a few hours, but the difference in mood/stress level at arrival is incredible and so I’ve decided to build it into my travel budget. There are only so many opportunities for vacation trips w my kids, and I don’t want to spend any of that valuable time being cranky/sleep deprived/uncomfortable when I can actually afford not to be. I’d rather cheap out elsewhere on stuff that doesn’t matter to me as much.

You have to enter your baby’s birthday when you buy his lap baby ticket and they check birth certificates at check in, you are not allowed to check in via kiosk or online ahead of time. They even check for newborns.

Nope! Plenty of deceitful travelers bring 3-4 yo kids on airplanes and pull the lap child card to avoid paying for an extra seat. I was boarding a flight last week IAD-SFO and a family of five had a 36” tall kid in a stroller (supposedly < 2 yo), an ~8 yo kid, and – get this – a teenager on all fours wearing a service animal harness and leash posing as a legitimate seeing eye dog for the pirate eye-patch wearing mom. Only three seats purchased for the five of them. It is out of control!!

Agreed- the alleged coach/economy plus- flying 1.1 million HHI poster above is either a troll or a fool

$1.1m poster here. I have a couple of comments:
(1) Based on my degrees and the line of business I am in, I am not a fool.
(2) You are right, you would never know how much money we have based on the cars that we drive and our house, but we are just not into material things. Ironically, we like to travel (coach ).
(3) Maybe one of the reasons that our NW percentile matches our income percentile is because we actually make saving money a priority.

Ok.. but what are you going to do with all that money? Serious question. Our financial advisor told us with the wealth we amassed so far and our current trajectory we should be treating ourselves to business class and nice hotels on our trips. We can afford it without affecting our retirement plans.

Let's say you pass away with $10 million. Where will it go? You can give that sum to your kids and they'll face the same issue evnetually. There's only so much most people can spend it on.

Now, different story if you plan to give it all to charity, and then i's understandable to some degree.

Good for you enjoying economy class. You are happy and at the end of the day, it’s the only thing that matters.

At least you are different from that rich middle age couple who was sitting in economy class, complaining about the food and cramped seats, when they could have easily afforded to pay for business seats.

I have been called an idiot for flying economy plus on DCUM. We have a $2m+ HHI. We fly economy plus now and flew economy plus at 1.1m and also 800k.

We recently went to Asia and I believe our original flights had cost around 15k for our family of 5. We did end up upgrading on the way home for 15k to be able to sleep. If we originally booked all business class, our trip would have costs 60k. Can we afford 60k for just flights for spring break? Yes, but we didn’t want to. We ended up splurging for flight back since Dh had to go to work and kids had school. Wanted to be able to sleep on plane.

(1) prestigious degrees and job titles tend to be inversely related to common sense

(2/3) Congrats that you enjoy sitting crammed into steerage class and depriving yourself of creature comforts so that you can brag about your frugality and die with more money in the bank that your heirs will likely fritter away. I still think you’re a fool.

Wonderfully done, my simplistic friend. No doubt you’re in BigLaw or Finance (aka the stomping grounds of the unaccomplished and incompetent dolts). The more intellectually refined and astute amongst us have long since realized that the optimal goal in life is to terminate with a NW of $0. The badges of honor you so boldly flaunt only further serve as testament to your unbridled ignorance and stupidity.

HHI is just about $10M. We always fly first/business. At this point, why not?

You make $10 million dollars per year? If so, yes, you should fly first (or private).

HHI of $10 million is of course very different than having a household net worth of $10 million.

We have a high HHI and woud flinch at spending $60k for a family of 5 too. But why was it that high? That's $12k/person. I just priced flying round-trip to Tokyo leaving next week, and it's $7,500/person. Buying tickets well in advance it should be a good bit lower than that.

Prices to Asia were massively inflated through late 2023 because of limited flights restarting post-covid. If they did it more than 2-3 months ago, I could see it being that expensive. More flights have restarted recently and the increased supply is finally pushing fares down.

I’ve been called an idiot for paying for business class on overnight flights. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t around here.
