800 miles and 8 hours round trip for maybe three nights?

I know people who take Amtrak for work between DC and NY round trip in the same day....

4 hours is nothing. Do yourself a favor and don’t ever go out west.

You’re weird OP. This is a totally normal trip.

If you don’t want to go, maybe see if DH will go alone and take kids.

I’m not sure driving is all that cheaper tho. And it’s so much more stressful than taking the train. With tolls, gas, and 45 to 75 dollars per night parking, driving to nyc isn’t cheap

+1 I know plenty of people who have gone to NYC for a day trip.

I regularly drive 6 hours each way to spend two nights with my parents. My in-laws routinely drive 4.5 hours each way to spend one night with us for kids events and they're 75!

I'm actually fascinated by what kind of life OP is living that 4 hours is a long drive.

+1 was pretty much going to write this same post down to the parent details. Do you ever do any weekend trips OP? If so, to where?

This.

If you live in the dc metro area, you drive to nyc for the weekend.

You only fly to nyc if you are going up and back the same day for business.

I’m really starting to wonder about all the posters who think the most routine trips are too long/not worth it.

ICYMI: some of us drive nearly 3 hours each way to the local beaches just for the day. NBD.

Heck, sometimes my commute to DC from upper MoCo is nearly two hours one way…so, nearly 4 hours a day. Mind blown, eh?

It’s nothing. We go overnight occasionally.

it’s definitely cheaper than taking the train for 4 people.

I think it’s weird to park in nj and take public transportation to nyc. It’s not hard to drive in the city. Sure, parking isn’t cheap, but it’s convenient to not have to use public transportation. Just pay for a garage…like a grown up.

Are you in the DMV? Going to NYC is fine for a few days. Some of us go for just a day of work.

What a weird flex. I also think it’s good to stay in NY but I don’t think paying for a NYC garage over NJ has anything to do with being or acting like a grownup.

This is a weird question. Three weeks ago, my middle schoolers took a field trip to NYC for the day from DC with their theater class. The bus left school at 6am, saw Wicked and The Play that Goes Wrong, walked around Times Square, and ate at Hard Rock. They got home around 3am. And even that short time they would say was totally worth it.

Geez - 4 hours in the car is nothing ! Wake up early and it will be done in no time. This is not a big deal or anything to be so dramatic about.

^^^ This.

I don't even get OPs post at all !

This is normal. You sound like a dud.

People do it all the time, OP. One of our kids had a music competition there years ago, and we drove up the night before and left the following day.

However, it's not my idea of a relaxing vacation, so you have to pipe up if you wanted something else.
