800 miles and 8 hours round trip for maybe three nights?

Seriously? I know people who make this trip every weekend!

Sorry!! This isn't even worth debating.

A road trip would be more like driving to Florida or New Orleans or Chicago.

I don’t consider it a road trip either, but it seems like a lot of driving for not a lot of time, but I guess I’m crazy!

I am looking forward to the trip, I just didn’t know if the time was worth the reward. I guess I need convincing on that.

Yes perfectly fine. We just traveled to Ohio for the eclipse and stayed 3 nights. It was at least 800 miles round trip, 7-8 hrs each way.

My 10 year old and I took a roadtrip to Boston for 3 days - I drove the whole way.

That’s a normal weekend trip.

I don’t understand your hesitation? If I lived within 4 hrs drive of NYC, I’d do it for a weekend trip for sure. We used to drive 9.5 hrs (650ish miles) one way (total of 19 hrs/1300 miles round trip) to visit my parents. That is a road trip. 4 hrs (about 230 miles from DC-NYC, by the way not 400 miles) to NYC barely counts as a road trip in my frame of reference.

+1 but we are the type of family who might get up early and drive to Charlottesville or Bethany and drive back that night when sports or work gets in the way of vacation time so my perspective might be skewed

I have driven to Manhattan and back in the same day.

Are you asking if it’s normal for people to take car trips for long weekends? I am in shock that this is even a question and also truly flabbergasted that you’ve never done this.

I just worry it will be hectic and not relaxing considering the drive time. We don’t take lots of driving trips, as I mentioned, so I guess my experience is minimal. Four hours each way for, essentially 2.5 days, just doesn’t seem worth it to me, but I don’t have anything to compare it to. We normally take long trips via air travel.

We are driving 10 hours RT this weekend for a 4 hour event, I wouldn’t even blink an eye at this road trip.

My only concern, would be if you are actually going to spend the entire three days in the city. You would be paying to park your car, at the hotel?

We did the trip when we first moved to DC. We parked at a ferry boat terminal in NJ for $15 per day, and took the ferry into the city. The rest of our trips we took the train or flew.

Lol this hardly even qualifies as a road trip. That’s not a long drive.

I drove 700 miles in two consecutive days by myself. What your husband is proposing is completely normal

Another vote of totally normal. We do 4 hour drives from the DC area for 1-2 nights all the time. VA Beach, NYC, Snowshoe, Pittsburgh, Raleigh. All similar drive times.
