To be a vaguely alternative teenage girl in the 90s (especially one trying to upset her religious parents like me) was to find him the hottest thing alive. Clearly we chose well. And most of our other male icons from the alternative era are dead (Cobain, Cornell, etc).

He put on weight and muscle, and cut his hair. That's it. He does look good now, IMO.

Another musician who did that is Morrissey. He's 62 now and pretty buff. He looks a lot different from his fey bony ass days holding a bouquet of gladioli. He exudes a lot more masculinity these days.
