Is Flint hill private school worth it?

They left Langley too right?

FH is a good school for average rich kids. If your kid wasn’t thriving in public in academics, sports or social, FH may be worth it for your child.

Yes- I agree- if your child is not doing well in the public- then FH might be a good choice. Lots of mediocre kids that can try and reach their potential- however limited that may be.

OMG. You are not nice.

Blue Ridge School is NW of Charlottesville, in rural Albemarle County. It has good facilities, good teaching, and small class sizes. They have had good success for many years helping boys reach their potential. I do not know the current cost, but maybe think about it, and possibly visit the school. Would be a 2-hour drive from Fairfax to BRS, so could visit DC on weekends and such.

Blue Ridge is full of academically subpar athletic scholarship boys; they are heavily recruited since athletics are the only standout at Blue Ridge. The teachers are mediocre, and the annual turnover is substantial. The school has a major drug and alcohol problem as well as bullying of the younger boys. Your son would get a much better education at Langley.

I’m not jealous. We are zoned for Langley and the kids who weren’t thriving switched to FH.

There have been several Ivy/Ivy+ admits that haven't been posted

Clearly jealous.

Sports are just as competitive as Potomac, the Cathedral Schools, Sidwell etc, and more competitive than Langley. More competitive than most public schools in the DMV.

Academics are more challenging than the DMV public schools as well. Socially it’s less kids like most schools mentioned on DCUM.

The drug problem at Blue Ridge is huge. They had five boys expelled for taking "magic mushrooms." Walk on campus, and all you will hear out of the dorms is rap music with foul language and kids yelling out foul language. Flint Hill would be a much better option.

Just my two cents, but we left another well known DC private to come to Flint Hill because we weren't happy with the trajectory of the other school. This has been the best decision we have ever made. Flint Hill is such a lovely community (which is not easy to do at a k-12!) and the kids are super nice and well behaved. We wanted a whole child approach to education and to avoid the pressure cooker situation of some of the elites and we did this choice on purpose, though I am sure we could have gotten admittance to the others if we really wanted. We have some pretty smart kids. They are more than sufficiently challenged and the environment is a great balance for everyone's mental health. I urge other parents not to dismiss it because it is lacking some of the cachet on other schools in the area... because of that reason, I feel like it attracts much more down to earth families (at least as much as you can with tuition this expensive and living this high cost of living area).

I love that FH focuses on the whole child, not just academics. My perspective has changed so much from keeping up with the Jones' to how can my child become the best possible version of themselves. Experience academic success, learn to advocate cate for themselves, work hard/dedication, find a passion. Find a safe and supporting environment to begin to figure who they are (US). It's expensive yes, but for us it's been worth it. Kids are more than just their GPA and what college they will get into. Way too much focus on these boards

You are judging them by the music they listen to?

DP. Worse, it is just someone gunning for BR. I disbelieve the allegations in this thread about BR. Our school plays them in sports sometimes. The description is not congruent with reality. Boarding schools generally are a fit for some kids, but not for other kids. BR is a fit for some kids, but not others. Confusing that it is mentioned in a FH thread, however.

Yeah they are talking about Blue Ridge. Blue Ridge is a good school. Small classes, nice campus, etc. It’s a religious school and some may not want that, but I think it’s a good option.
