I am a Ross MBA grad. If your daughter wants to live/work in California, definitely go Berkeley. Just because it's local to Silicon Valley. Chicago or East Coast, go Michigan.

I like your daughter's combo of Michigan major/minors BUT I wonder if she can go deep enough into the secondary areas of focus to develop applied skills in them. If just going to the route of seeking a high-paying consulting or Wall Street new grad job that won't matter. However, it might be worth sitting down with course catalog lists and mapping out in detail exactly how her course schedule would look by year.

Oh, okay. If they got into the business school at Berkeley, would recommend over LSA Econ Major with Business Minor at Michigan. My sister was an Econ major at Michigan and many recruiting events were only for Business majors at Ross. Wall Street options were very limited for Econ majors. Hard nowadays to transfer into Ross as a sophomore (didn't used to be) if not directly admitted.

My married niece and nephew both attended Ross and are currently living in SF doing very well. That Michigan degree is recognized all over the country.

Hi! PP. Not saying the Michigan name's not recognized. It's just logistically easier to be a local to pursue internships and job opportunities. For example, I would give Georgetown the edge for someone that wanted to work at the U.S. Department of State.

Also, as someone born in Northern California, I think people who move out there or want to move out there need to know what they are getting into. I loved the town where I was born, and in my opinion it's been ruined by encroaching suburbia and being a distant bedroom community for Silicon Valley. I can definitely see why some people want to leave California now. It's got a bit of a Lorax vibe for me.

But every one is different...so I say people who are all-in on the California dream should get out there ASAP and decide for themselves. My dad's certainly still nostalgic about it.
