Harvard definitely cares and asks about legacy. If they didn’t the lawsuit about Harvard’s legacy admissions process wouldn’t have legs (5% of applicants are legacy and 30% of admits are legacy).

They don’t ask on the application. So how do they know?

His father graduated magna cum laude from this school in undergraduate and went on to earn his masters there as well. His father earned his JD from there. My father taught medicine there for 22 years.

DS has never expressed interest in attending until yesterday. I can't name the school, but for sake of argument lets assume it is Yale.

Is there any chance he would be offered a spot?

Legacy matters less and less. And nothing is happening with an 1180. Definitely don't submit that. A 3.8 is going to be regarded differently depending on the school. Public students with all the APs are rolling with 4.8s. Rigorous courses will matter. So will ECs. And recommendations.

I don't think Yale level schools are realistic.

Ha.

DP. My DD just got ED at UVA with an 1180 and no hooks. We are white and full pay, no legacy.

OP- know that this forum in particlaur is about 7 angry women that want to sh*t on your kid's dreams, that is it.

A nonlegacy applying test optional ED to UVA is not the same situation as a legacy applying to Yale.

Legacies apply TO to Cornell/Northwestern /Brown all the time. And get in

I know a # of legacies applying to Brown with tip top GPAs and test scores who were rejected over last six years. The legacies I know applying to Cornell submit test scores.

Ummm. Most of Cornell is test blind right?

If it's an Ivy with grade inflation, I wouldn't worry about it. The hardest part is getting in.

Esp Yale and brown.

Your kid is going to need to apply ED and TO. I am going with unlikely, but, your legacy status is strong. Your kid is going to need a really strong application with great LORs. Hire a professional.

Very doubtful. I attended a T20 (for free!) way back in the day ('84) because my dad was a dean there. On paper I was way behind my peers but in reality the work was so incredibly easy. I've since believed that it is easy on purpose so all the students look good.

We are not talking about UVA. Go meddle in some other thread. You don't even need legacy to get into top 30 school like UVA.

Personally, I wouldn’t apply. If you can only get a 1180 your kid will most likely struggle at most T20 schools. Majority of kids there are 1500+, the stragglers are 1400+. I’d want my kid at a school where they can succeed not struggle academically

Really? I don't think the legacy status is strong or at least not strong in this new era of college admissions.

What are the ages of your wife and nephew? You may not be aware of how competitive admissions are these days.

The kid is really just a regular legacy (1 parent) with some other connections.
