So took Algebra 1 in 7th, Geo in 8, Alg Ii in 9th and precalc in 10th?

Correct.

NP. Congratulations on the admission!
May I ask, how many years of foreign language did your DC take? My DC is interested in VA Tech Engineering and really hoping to be done after three years and we're trying to figure out whether that would be a mistake.

Our kid was accepted with only took 3 years of language. DC did get a 4 on the AP Spanish test after Jr year.

If a potential engineering student from a mid- to high-performing FCPS school has only gone up to AP Calc BC, then they need to have better "stats" in other areas (GPA, SAT, EC's, leadership, sports).

My DC at a high performing FCPS school absolutely had friends admitted to VT engineering who were in his Calc AB class senior year. They were just kids in orchestra with him - nothing out of the ordinary EC-wise. I think DC even had higher math scores than his engineering-bound friends (he got 35 and 780, but they had better weighted GPAs and more rigor overall compared to my music major kid who isn't very academics oriented).

NP. Honestly, how could you or your kid possibly know the stats of the other kids and what ECs they did outside of school, beyond orchestra? You have no idea. I hate it when parents claim to know all of these details about all the other kids. Absurd.

From McLean? Any advice or anything that you would recommend for a student interested in applying to VT engineering?

No, DC residents and DC private. Not a big 3 (that term is so ick but didn’t want you to assume Sidwell etc)

In terms of the application itself pay close attention to the supplemental questions. VT reads them and they have weight.

You didn’t ask but adding—

VT has been an amazing and rewarding experience for my kid. The work is difficult in terms of volume. Google the check sheets for the specific majors within engineering. There is no room for electives to speak of. The professors are supportive and want the students to succeed but they have to figure out how to manage the course load.

She is not in a sorority and found friends and a good group of kids.

I hope if your student applies they get in! Good luck!

Coming from a DC (non-big 3) private is totally different than coming from an FCPS high school. Remember that it is very common for STEM-focused students in NOVA public schools to take AP Calc as a junior and MV Calc as a senior. VT is comparing students to other students within the same school/district. If a potential engineering student from a mid- to high-performing FCPS school has only gone up to AP Calc BC, then they need to have better "stats" in other areas (GPA, SAT, EC's, leadership, sports).
Beyond rigorous math. don't they consider AP Physics, AP Chem & AP humanities? ECs may be down the list

[b]Of course they do. Course rigor is very important.
My list of examples of stats within other areas was not all-inclusive.

My kid was accepted and had taken 5 years of French (up through AP).

Big difference in admission standards between two schools. VT is ranked #13 in engineering while WPI is #61. WPI is like a super safety school for anyone.

And yet you get just as good a job graduating from WPI as you do from VT.

4 years total (including MS credit)

PP. Thank you! My DC will have 3 years total after this year including 2 in MS. I’m not sure whether it’s better to have Bs in the 3rd and possibly 4th years of the foreign language or stop after this year and take another AP elective that’s more likely to yield a higher grade. DC has no problem making As in other classes so far. We will discuss with the counselor as well.

In order to get into AP Spanish as a junior, I assume your kid took Span 3 as a freshman and Span 4 as a sophomore? If that is the case, then that is not considered the same as taking "3 years of a foreign language" which is widely regarded as Lang 1, Lang 2, and Lang 3.

It’s over. Send your kid to HVAC repair school.

In 11th or 12th grade?

Of course 12th. People need to relax.

They recommend 3 years at VTech. If you want to be a computer engineer you need more computer/math/science classes. Not language. 3 should be fine.

You only need to years of high school language to satisfy the school requirement if you are accepted, so there shouldn’t be a need for more.

The first link says 2 years FL for College of engineering. Where are they recommending 3 years?

I am not sure what you are looking at. The first is the common data set. Under tab C it lists required and recommended courses for those applying for admission and it recommends 3 years FL.
The second link is requirements for those who are at Virginia Tech in the school of engineering and they only require two years to satisfy college of engineering requirements.

Some of these kids were long-time friends who were at my house all the time. I knew them since elementary, we were friends with their parents, and we talked a lot during the college application process. Not everyone is weirdly secretive about this stuff. I don't know everyone's exact SAT score but I do know that kids from his HS were getting in with Calc AB senior year, non-STEM ECs, and SATs below 1500 One of them did have a Boy Scout award.

8-12th grade? Our MS offers it in 8th or 1 year split over 7th and 8th
