From McLean? Any advice or anything that you would recommend for a student interested in applying to VT engineering?

No, DC residents and DC private. Not a big 3 (that term is so ick but didn’t want you to assume Sidwell etc)

In terms of the application itself pay close attention to the supplemental questions. VT reads them and they have weight.

You didn’t ask but adding—

VT has been an amazing and rewarding experience for my kid. The work is difficult in terms of volume. Google the check sheets for the specific majors within engineering. There is no room for electives to speak of. The professors are supportive and want the students to succeed but they have to figure out how to manage the course load.

She is not in a sorority and found friends and a good group of kids.

I hope if your student applies they get in! Good luck!

Coming from a DC (non-big 3) private is totally different than coming from an FCPS high school. Remember that it is very common for STEM-focused students in NOVA public schools to take AP Calc as a junior and MV Calc as a senior. VT is comparing students to other students within the same school/district. If a potential engineering student from a mid- to high-performing FCPS school has only gone up to AP Calc BC, then they need to have better "stats" in other areas (GPA, SAT, EC's, leadership, sports).

APS in the past has published the number of students enrolled in each HS class and really very, very few take the post-Calculus math classes. DS is at VT engineering with Calc BC as his last math class.

True... let's leave APS out and just include FCPS and LCPS (mostly eastern) in the "common" comment.

^^^ And again... my FCPS student is being compared mostly with other FCPS students.

Beyond rigorous math. don't they consider AP Physics, AP Chem & AP humanities? ECs may be down the list

Yes, my kid.

My DC at a high performing FCPS school absolutely had friends admitted to VT engineering who were in his Calc AB class senior year. They were just kids in orchestra with him - nothing out of the ordinary EC-wise. I think DC even had higher math scores than his engineering-bound friends (he got 35 and 780, but they had better weighted GPAs and more rigor overall compared to my music major kid who isn't very academics oriented).

So took Algebra 1 in 7th, Geo in 8, Alg Ii in 9th and precalc in 10th?

Correct.

NP. Congratulations on the admission!
May I ask, how many years of foreign language did your DC take? My DC is interested in VA Tech Engineering and really hoping to be done after three years and we're trying to figure out whether that would be a mistake.

Also interested in hearing about this…

Of course they do. Course rigor is very important. My list of examples of stats within other areas was not all-inclusive.

Yes, this is an example of FCPS students having better stats in other areas.

4 years total (including MS credit)

I got into WPI for engineering with no calculus in high school.
