UW Madison horribly underrated

Its football crowds are known for being rowdy, drunk whose cheers are often vulgar and they are proud of it. But, it is an excellent school.

Are you this simple and lazy on every aspect of your life or only when it comes to stereotyping colleges?

So is Harvard.

How is the statement about diversity inaccurate?

The Great Michigan isn’t diverse either.

Two of my friends' kids got in off the wait list with straight A honors. Big 10 has a couple of schools that have great academics and a robust party culture and that is one of them. People love it and the campus is beautiful.

I also think Northwestern has had a few rough years with the football/hazing, cheerleader sexual harassment scandal and claims of anti-semitism, plus this ongoing issue with the town and the football field (all of which in DC you may know little to nothing about but are big news stories out here). I think the NU kids are looking at Madison.

Since I'm not aware of these issues at Northwestern, can you please elaborate?

It is a fine school to go to when you don’t have better options

Aren’t you just lovely, calling kids in a place you have clearly never been “mid level.” Get a life.

What??? There are ample outdoor sports and the state capital. The city has a strong farm to table culture and offers lots of fresh, locally sourced food (both in grocery stores and restaurants). People bike, canoe, hike, sail, etc. Students have internships and jobs in the state government. Madison is also socially conscious and there's plenty of opportunities to volunteer or work with people. There's a lot to do outside of drinking.

It’s one of those schools that shows why you can’t rely only on rankings to judge a college. The size of the enrollment & its mission to serve the state residents are going to result in the students having a wider spectrum of abilities than, say, Princeton. But an undergrad can find great professors & great classes with just a little effort.

As for the weather, ask people who have been through brutal situations (military training, football practice, etc) & they will often tell you that you can enjoy almost anything if you have camaraderie among the people who are enduring the same discomfort as you. Luckily, places like Wisconsin & Michigan have plenty of hardy folks who grew up with gloomy winters to keep the whining to a minimum & the mood positive when the snow comes & the sun disappears for a month.

Compare OOS to in-state for admissions and you will come to a different conclusion.

This. It is overrated because it is in a scenic college town. No one would go there if it was remote and ugly. It is no different from Nebraska State in many ways

So much ignorance on this thread. Typical of DCUM, where most people are only fake smart.

The sun doesn't actually disappear in Madison the way it does in Ann Arbor. No lake effect, so other than when fronts are coming through, it is very sunny albeit cold at times.

But that is why there is hockey on the lake, ice fishing etc as part of winter activities. Get a warm coat and a good hat and gloves and you are fine.
