I feel like there was a post not too long ago about this very thing. Why does MCPS not see this? Or care?

Equity. MCPS doesn’t want to punish kids of certain races, so it chooses to not punish kids of all races.

And rightly so. Demanding that students be in class on time creates an oppressive culture that perpetuates white supremacy.

At our school, my kid got detention for showing up 2 minutes late for their first period. They're a walker. Some of you seem to be posting from an alternate reality.

I know! A roving gang of nerds with pocket protectors was bullying my kids.

WJ is the school that just recently had a kid arrested for bringing a gun to school. You can't pass WJ off as if it's only got academically-minded, well-behaved children. Get a grip, Gertrude.

Or maybe your experience and your school is not the only one that's happening in a school system that serves 160,000 students? Maybe that could be it?

Hall sweeps sounds like a prison thing.

It's funny you should say that because I was hoping they could hire former prison guards to work the schoolyard.

Some people in education's obsession with equating rules, discipline and enforcement of rules as equivalent to prison would be hilarious, if it didn't have such a detrimental impact on our society as they attempt to peel back any semblance of structure and consequence from the education setting.

Newsflash: Kids are supposed to be in class. Having an admin or staff usher them into class does not mean the school environment is a prison.

Are ushers in churches turning the church into a prison by asking people to stay in their seats or return to their seats and enforcing the church's rules during service? No. Stop the tom foolery.

If I got a call that one of my kids
was not in class, they’d be in trouble - lose the phone, etc.

Don’t update their contact info.
Don’t answer the phone.
Don’t listen to voicemails.

It feels punitive but I've tried lots of "carrots", none of which have worked. Can you do something similar in your class?

Sounds like the MCPS kids hanging out in the hallway end up at your community college!

For what it's worth, I (a MCPS parent with various advanced degrees) have recently taken a lot of classes at our community college, and I've been really impressed with the students.

Then the consultant teachers blame write up and fire the new teachers. Welcome to education or lack there of it pretty messed up for teachers who will get blamed all day and have to do it again tomorrow. The kids know they can cuss you out and you have to take it.

My friend’s DD is finishing her fall student teaching placement. She said “If I want to be a masochist, I can get paid a lot more for it.”

That's not the purpose of church ushers. They direct traffic, not enforce rules.

Don’t update their contact info.
Don’t answer the phone.
Don’t listen to voicemails.

Then you kick the kid out of school until the parent has a meeting with the school. Easy.

And yet not how school or state policies work because of this tricky thing called politics.
