No Hall Sweeps?

We're talking about children in schools. What are you talking about?

It’s called using your physical presence. They teach educators to use proximity to redirect students… Literally moving towards students in the hall is better than sitting and being on your phone as a security guard.

You've obviously never taught in a school with students who are highly reactive. You never get in their personal space unless you want to be attacked.

If you are that scared of teens you need a new job. They will behave that way because it works. Tell them to go home if they will not attend class.

Well, my colleague got a new job after a student punched her in the jaw and broke it. Have you heard of the teaching shortage? Teachers are out there but they don't want to do the job anymore. Ever wonder why? Thankfully, I teach mostly honors students and they are mostly non-confrontational but I don't dare touch them if they fall asleep in class. My other colleague had a desk flipped over on her foot when she woke a sleeping student. Broke some toes and needed surgery.

No, I don't wonder why, especially looking at the admin at our school. It starts there. And, with the parents. I was shocked going to a meeting listening to our principal say, this is the rule but it's ok they don't follow it over and over again. When I pick up my child for a medical appointment, the number of kids going to school late is absurd (for no reason). If you cannot show up on time, you should fail that class.

Yes, draconian punishments PLEASE!!! It doesn't matter that they miss class and fail to learn. Nobody cares about that but we need to make the rules more important than the outcome!

It does seem to me that, at least for some posters, punishment is not a means to an end (kids who are learning) but an end in itself (punish those kids! punish them! punish them!).

I know! Let's punish them to show em who's boss!
The alternative is to not punish kids and allow them to pretend to apologize which doesn't benefit anyone.

There are multiple alternatives, not just one. And the question is, which alternative most effectively accomplishes the goal of helping kids successfully learn?

Name this mythical alternatively that isn't punitive but effectively accomplishes the goal of controlling undesirable behavior and holds kids accountable. And don't say we need to invest in programs or mental health, which take years to pay off on if they ever do. What's the alternative that can be implemented tomorrow to stop the madness.

Children who stab, shoot and rob their peers or adults in the school and community are indeed violent criminals. Unfortunately, there are too many MCPS students who fit that description these days.

Our justice system and MCPD handle assault, stabbings and shootings. It is not an issue for MCPS.

It becomes problematic when teachers are instructed to be mandatory reporters. Usually we do our jobs but when it negatively influences our appraisals to keep our jobs, it becomes a corrupted system that is more about valuing cover-up instead of identifying and working g t I solve problems. Teachers get punished for following g the rules and admin get rewarded for not following g the rules. This is called corruption.

Nobody said MCPS has to try them. But these children are charged and sometimes convicted of said crimes in court. Which again, makes them violent criminals, which is what the PP was attempting to dispute.

Gotta love DCUM! School to prison pipeline, indeed!

If they committed an actual crime, then the court would find an appropriate punishment. This isn't the job of MCPS.

Can you provide any documented examples? I mean if this is a real problem that should be easy.

That help can only come by voting out the leftists on the BOE. Since that's not going to happen, it's time to leave MoCo.

You are so ignorant.

According to your post, the most important things are:
1) attending class
2) learning

How does enforcing rules about GOING TO CLASS go against what you are saying? And kids cannot learn the material if they do not attend. Even with the 55% rule, when kids miss class, they miss vital time to learn and practice skills needed to do well in assignments.

Your argument is so flawed. That’s like saying: Who cares that the mower is broken! The most important thing is that our yard is overgrown!” You have to fix the problem at the source. The problem is that MCPS has taken away EVERY consequence available to teachers and admin to enforce going to class.

Also the corruption happens when you take all of the tools structure consequences resources books etc away from the teacher and then blame them for the problems in schools.
