Not sure if your life is completely pathetic or if I should be jealous that you have enough time and energy to write this. Who cares?! They are two sate flagships. No one owns them or gets a special prize based on the number of Rhodes Scholars. -Someone who was admitted to both |
I was going to school at WVU when they were getting a lot of these kids through (late 80s, early 90s) and while the kids were impressive, the scholarships were much more about the infrastructure at the university for building a resume, knowing the schedules, supporting the kids doing the right research/projects/internships etc. The person spearheading this retired and WVU hasn't had one since 1995. I think places like Stanford/Harvard etc can get kids resumes built with a LOT less work than a school like WVU; there's simply many more impressive kids, and many more opportunities to do impressive things. |
Not a big deal at all except for Insecure UVA boosters. |
Lol of course it’s a big deal. It’s without question the single most prestigious scholarship that can be awarded to a graduating senior from a US University. It’s “not a big deal” only if one is jealous of UVA. |
And serpentine walls too! |
It's only a big deal if the person wants to go study at Oxford. Not everyone cares about that. But, ok. UVA is awesome. There.. does that make you feel better? My STEM kid and their STEM major friends still wouldn't look at UVA, though. |
Ask your STEM kid if they’d take a Rhodes Scholarship and get back to me. |
Zero Nobels or Fields Medals. You know...actual results.
Thats why UVa gets no global respect. |
DP. I asked my MIT kid and they had no interest whatsoever and thought it was a random idea to study in UK. |
Yep. It's the UVA booster again. Just so cringeworthy. |
They’re not really unless they drop out and form a company, that’s where it’s at |
If you think that makes your kid look good, I got news for you . . . |
They don't need the self-validation from a scholarship. They're much better than that. That's for sure. |
What have UVA Rhodes Scholars accomplished (other than getting a Rhodes)? I am just curious. |
+1 my DC is not interested in getting a PhD in STEM, even though they are actually a dual UK citizen, and briefly toyed with the idea of applying to college to the UK. UVA did not even cross their minds. |
