+1, DH and I lived in DC for 5 years and then migrated out to VA. Now we literally only set foot in DC to go to work, where we park in our secure buildings. We used to have occasional date nights in DC after work, but we don’t anymore because it’s not worth it. It’s really sad.

Huge overreaction.

No, it’s just my personal comfort level. YMMV, but I am not alone in my assessment of DC and my conclusion that my discomfort with being out in DC at night makes it so planning a date night in the city isn’t worth it. I don’t begrudge those that have a different risk tolerance, but I’m not going to be gaslit into thinking DC is some shining safe utopia and I’m just paranoid.

NP and there’s a wide gap between shining safe utopia and I only set foot in Dc to walk from the garage to my office building. You can go to dinner in DC and get back in your car by 7:30 to drive home. If you are worried about it being dark then only do it in the summer. You are a bit paranoid though.

Recently on the Wharf there was an armed robbery of restaurant patrons, another shiny new restaurant had the front glass shot out. Also, a Congressman was carjacked by 3 armed teens nearby, same evening. People having concerns, especially parents, who tend to be more risk averse, is a reasonable response to a situation that shows no signs of changing. After being summoned to the Hill, the USAO is now prosecuting an increased just over 50% of violent crime. If something happens to you, you are not likely to get justice either.

The traumatized woman in the video has spent her career working with at risk youth in DC. None of that mattered, she was just someone out and available to rob.

These young men are NOT engaging in armed robberies like this one because they're hungry.

Ehhh... I agree
But also crime is up literally everywhere not just DC.

LA, Minneapolis, Denver, Dallas, Vermont, Georgia, Ohio

Just to show how out of touch you are, you haven’t bothered to change your talking points.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/08/19/dc-homicides-rising-major-cities/

- DC is a violent crime outlier nationally.
- Homicides are now back to 1990s levels.
- It’s not just racist Republicans trying to make politics out of this that are concerned.

I have been eagerly awaiting you and your crime apologist friends new excuse.

There are a lot fewer low information types repeating this anymore, I presume because most of them now know someone affected by the skyrocketing crime.

I come in to DC from close in suburb once a week during the day. Otherwise we head in for dinner, concerts, shows a few times a month. I definitely don’t feel as safe as I used to. I saw a movie at Union Market on a Sunday night and the walk to my car was scary. U street night out didn’t feel that safe.

Indeed. It's likely to buy more white sneakers.

Yeah, we live in the city and will be driving out. If they are robbing Tabard Inn, literally nowhere is safe.

While it would hurt our businesses, the only thing that may force our rulers to act on crime is if we boycott DC venues. Collectively.
Thoughts? What if everyone chose a sports game to boycott, or the Mayor's favorite restaurant or whatnot. Sit-in outside Allen's house? Maybe when the stuff they care about is threatened to close they'll act?

Wow, I’ll bet she feels pretty stupid. Realizing you’ve wasted your life up ‘til now. Maybe she made a difference in a couple kid’s lives….maybe. But on balance, what a complete waste of time. Must be devastating for her to come to this realization.

I wish her well. I hope she finds a calling where she can have a positive impact. DC is a lost cause though.

Speak for yourself. I’m not ruled by anyone.

I voluntarily comply with laws passed by elected representatives, up until such a point that such compliance doesn’t impinge upon my safety or well being.

But no one is going to “rule” me.

I live and work in DC. I've never been robbed, never had my car broken into and have never had my car stolen. Lots of us here thank you. I go out at night all the time. I NEVER step foot in VA. Never. Not worth it. Please, there are people like you. I'm way happier in DC.

This is the attitude of very privileged people who are able to buy safety and use their perch gaslight everyone else about the crime situation most of us deal with daily.

I live in NE, not West of the Park. I lived in Shaw when they were still shooting at O Street Market (not the gentrified "Market at O Street"). I understand that crime in going up. I'm also not paranoid. I've always walked through life like a live in a city. The number of people I see walking down the street look at their phones is astonishing. The number of people who still keep stuff in the car is amazing. The number of people not paying attention to their surroundings is ridiculous. I look at people (especially white people) who walk around like they believe they are teflon is shocking. My black friends actually laugh about how white people cross the street without looking with confidence because it only occurs to them that a car will stop.

I think people have been lulled into a belief that because the city is gentrifying, you no longer have to be wise about your safety. My son told me about an incident he saw at 2am. He was out with some friends and he saw someone that I had previously introduced him too who sloppy drunk barely able to walk down the street after stumbling out of a bar. This guy was just out having a good time. He was about to robbed. My son stopped it because he knew I knew the guy. That was about to be a crime of opportunity. Should that ever happen - of course not. But we must be more careful.

You sound like every Prince of Petworth commenter back in 2008 blaming someone for getting mugged because they were "probably" listening to their iPod.

It's funny because all those things can be pursued together and the crime bill was killed by the republican congress/biden, tool.

The “crime bill” would have eliminated minimum sentences for violent crimes and reduced maximum sentences for those crimes to the average sentence, which would have reduced criminal penalties in half for the exact violent crimes that are exploding right now: homicide, carjacking, and assault with a deadly weapon.

What made the walk to your car scarier than before?
