Given the rise of the likelihood of terrorism in DC, can our local criminals be viewed as diverting resources?

Short answer: No, there cannot.

Longer answer: Why is it a given that our threat levels just went up? Do we have an essentially unguarded land border with territory controlled by Hamas?

Hamas has issued threatening statements against allies of Israel. In my mind, a threatening statement is a threat.

My family and I spend hours each week in a synagogue in D.C., and I am entirely unconcerned that Hamas is going to attack us here, no matter what kind of nonsense they say in the press or on social media.

What about some run of the mill nutjob? Nah, that’s never happened.

I don't think some sort of sweeping crime emergency action will make that less likely. (And my synagogue dues have also gone up a lot since the Pittsburgh shooting to pay for additional security.) Do I worry about someone attacking us while we're praying or going to school there? Yes, the thought crosses my mind pretty much every time I enter the building, though usually only fleetingly.

But OP seems to be drawing a pretty direct line from the attacks this weekend to the need to do something about crime in D.C., which to me just doesn't make any sense at all.

OP here, to be clear, I already thought we "needed to do something about crime". This makes me think it more. And no, I'm not worried specifically about your synagogue, though I am glad you have security given that a church attack was thwarted in VA 2 weeks ago. I'm worried about all of us.

I have good news for you if you're worried about all of us: In the unlikely event that Hamas does come threaten Americans in Washington, D.C., they'll look for the Jews first.

They don't discern. But if they did try to kill Jews first, that's not "good news".

I am not specifically worried about Hamas. I think times like these bring all the crazies out. And I resent that we may have to deal with that type of threat ON TOP of the regular criminals terrorizing us all.

I think the terrorists will probably become victim of a violent crime by DC's local criminals before they can unleash a reign of terror on DC residents.

We have enough Crips and MS-13 hanging around here armed to the teeth and any stupid Hamas terrorist who comes here will either be carjacked or just die of Fentanyl exposure.

Think of the criminals as our private law enforcement.

I'm the OP and you have made me laugh. Thank you

It might be for the rest of you! I agree, probably wouldn't be for me.

Even though it sounds extreme on surface, it would be significantly beneficial for the district.

So you’re advocating using the Israeli attack as a reason to strip Americans of their constitutional rights?

Calling in the national guard, passing measures responsive to the heightened crime and threat levels (like the enhanced curfew for DC youth was just passed) etc is not stripping anyone of rights. It would be enhanced security, which a lot of us in DC would like right no as we essentially have a failed municipal leadership and are currently each responsible for protecting ourselves, our family and our property. If we called in the American military on American soil, that would be violating our constitutional rights (posse comitatus).

I haven't heard a single person in DC say any such thing. Who do you work for?

Hamas said they would target Americans if America intervened militarily. We are already sending weaponry

Sure. We have an actual threat from RWNJs. Hamas is not a threat to the US or Washington DC. The people who support Jim Jordan and the J6’ers are much more likely to unleash terrorism in the US. Remember there were two bombs placed in the city on J5.

ha ha ha!
