OP, you must have some family money, or be a really old DC area fed who is still working, to be able to afford a second house in the mountains.

Some feds save and don't live paycheck to paycheck so yeah, a vacation is possible.

So feds buying a vacation home in the mountains as well as a home in the DC area? Nope, not unless you have other money or are much older, like 70+.

We have enough money saved to take a vacation and don't live paycheck or paycheck, but who would do that when you don't know when you will get paid again, unless you are single and don't own a house?

It's more likely some feds will use the time to find a higher paying industry job. It's a revolving door at my agency, especially with RTO.

You do realize it is possible to take a vacation without having a vacation home.

OP specifies their own mountain vacation home.

Op also asks for other ideas which could include ideas from people who do not own vacation homes but still vacation.

I hope a lot of the dead weight quits.

Really, you months of living expenses in liquid cash AND own a vacation home?? Get real. Feds don’t know when they will be paid, this could easily go into 2-3 months of now pay. Our mortgage is $3k, so just to keep roof on our head we will need $10k liquid.

Who in their right mind would drop $1ks more for a vacation that could be cancelled at any moment?

So I know OP is some weird case, like an old dude who bought homes when they were cheap or family money.

No one made you take a mortgage you struggle paying.

That sounds nice. I was thinking maybe Williamsburg or Jamestown. If I feel up for it maybe Boston!

This pretty much tells you who is starting these threads: people who aren't feds and for some reason hate us.

You do realize the difference between non-essential and dead-weight? Essential means anyone who is directly related to the security of the nation. Non-essential can be anyone from cleaners, to those who are responsible for training employees to do their jobs, to HR departments responsible for hiring, payroll, retirements- among other aspects. Basically all the support functions involved in well, supporting those directly responsible for national security matters. Dead-weight is not an accurate description of those functions.

We booked a Disney cruise out of NYC leaving 9/28. Around $3,000 including travel to New York. DH is retired and no kids at home.

Ignore the haters OP!

Where do you live that you have same mortgage and where did you buy? It’s not like renting is cheaper.

The point is OP is clearly in different financial category than most Fed workers simply by fact she owns a mountain home.

So it’s a hobby job to her trust or breadwinner DH, so she is fine blowing it off and not getting paid.

For many Feds in this region, we have to work and have delayed pay. And no mountain home or breadwinner spouse to support us.

I hope there’s not a shutdown but if there is, hoping to get my holiday shopping & cards done early (not sent just purchased). I know it’s be so busy when we go back and this will be one less thing to deal with at home.

Last time I was affected by a furlough (lasted a week) I tried to do a "things I've never done" daily event, like a staycation.

There were a couple of museums I have never spent enough time in, so I went alone and lingered where I wanted. I had never been to one of the popular seashore locations. Took the boat shuttle back and forth between DC/Alexandria, etc.

Had a blast and it didn't require a big outlay of money nor advance scheduling.

NP here. We aren’t planning a vacation (& don’t have a vacation home), but we are a single income family (GS-15) with kids and have many, many months of living expenses socked away, so yes— we could easily take a trip if we wanted, even with no paycheck for a while… we are frugal in general & our trips are not extravagant to begin with. No family money. I don’t know why people act like this is so hard to believe?

+1

Same here. I'm essential so will be working regardless, but we have probably 2 years of mortgage payments in the bank (keeping cash in case we need to supplement the 529s when one kid heads to college in a couple years). Live in a townhouse close in, $3700/month mortgage.

Perplexing. There are threads all the time on here that indicate a typical DCUM has net worth in the 95%+ percentile in US? Even if Fed makes less than average DCUM, did not realize they live paycheck to paycheck. Both can’t be true. Look at the other caribbean thread, 1k a day vacation is considered a good deal over christmas.
